We're a PS3 family. Their office has been calling people. I know they haven't finished as of Tuesday afternoon. PS41 is fighting the DOE about the assignments. They want to use their internal list for K and PreK assignments. New neighbor trying to get into 41 got a letter from DOE saying younger child in PreK at 41 and she got a call from the parent coordinator, because her older daughter got a slot in an upper grade. PC told mom that she skipped people on the internal list and that neither child really had a slot. She also said that mom cannot go through the DOE to get into 41, although that is what all parents in the cachement were told to do by the DOE and PS3. I know the PreKs were all screwed up, but what is PS41 trying to pull with the internal list? BTW: Family moved from another district 2 school. [ Reply | More ]

what do you mean by internal list? families applied directly to doe, so how would the schools have some sort of list that's different from the doe's? they don't even know who applied and who didn't. [ Reply | More ]

PS41 has an internal list. Mom visited both 3 and 41 this past winter. PS41 told her they would add her older daughter's name to their list and if she got in then the younger one would likely get into PreK. PS3 gave her the DOE form and told her to send it to the regional office. [ Reply | More ]

sorry, but this makes absolutely no sense to me. and you're contradicting yourself. first you say she was told she couldn't go through doe, now you're saying they gave her a form. there is no "regional" office, btw. honestly, the nastiness and misinformation spread on both sides of the 41 vs. 3 war makes me sorry i ever moved into the zone. Mom was told two different things at 3 and 41. 3 told her to go through DOE; 41 said only their internal list was valid. Mom put name on 41 internal list and filled out DOE forms given to her by 3 requesting 41. Got letter from DOE saying younger in PreK at 41. PC called her (in not a so nice way) and told her that neither DC was definitely in 41 and that their internal list would be determining placement in 41. [ Reply | More ]

still sounds fishy. the process for applying to 41 was on their website and it explicitly stated there was a lottery, you need to fill out application and turn it in to boro enrollment office, etc. it is true they are disputing the lottery results now, but i think your friend must have misunderstood about the process. No, she visited both schools and did exactly what they told her to do. PS41 is trying to use their internal list and not the DOE assigned list for PreK-1. Mom didn't call PC; PC called her (and basically yelled at her for going through the DOE to get older DC into 1st at 41. [ Reply | More ]

sorry for your loss. Was it sudden? I think that can make it harder to deal with. Grief is a tough thing and it takes time. Don't expect to get back to "normal" vert soon. Let yourself cry. It's a big deal. If you feel unable to function, get some help from a therapist who specializes in loss. I would not recomend meds if you can avoid it. I think it's better to feel your feelings (again, unless you are unable to function) You just have to go through it and there really isnt an easy way. it sucks and it's hard. Very sorry. it will continue to be terrible off and on for awhile but eventually it will be ok. You don't get over something like this but you learn to integrate it into your life. There are some great books out there about grief. CS Lewis actually wrote one called "a grief observed" that was great for me. It's about losing his wife, so some things won't apply, but a lot of it resonated for me. Sorry again for your loss. It's tough but you can get through it. Just make sure that while you are being strong for other people, you also allow yourself time and space to grieve. [ Reply | More ]

To the OP: it's so hard losing a parent! I lost my mother 15 years ago. I cried myself to sleep for 2 years straight (no joke). Grieving takes time, and the moments of missing her are so much more poignant when you want to share your kids with her and she's not there. Be kind to yourself, give yourself plenty of time. It's a cliche, but time does heal. [ Reply | More ]

lost my mom as a teen and you just go day by day and slowly slowly the hurt becomes less. i know it doesn't help now in the think of it, but the natural order is for us to lose parents and we are capable of adapting and going on. it is the other way - the loss of a child - that i think scars permanently.
