ugh. no. just say, not everyone goes to the same school. sophie is going to x school, jasper is going to y school. there are lots of nice dcs at your school, too and you'll make lots of new friends. i'm sure in op's neighborhood or preschool there are dcs going all over. you don't need to explain any more than that. Which then begs the question, "Why can't I go my friend's school?" The parents have to settle the why question by saying it was their choice, and that's that. [ Reply | More ]

Don't parents always make choices about what they feel is best for their child? Conveying that in my book helps a kid feel that the parents are in charge and that it's not random and she got the short end of the stick. [ Reply | More ]

I actually think Harvard is a VERY different place now from when I went there in the early nineties. I wouldn't get in now, for starters, since the applicant pool is much broader and more impressive, and they have drastically changed the social life on campus by taking away students' choice of what "house" to live in for their last three years of school. Your analogy (between colleges and NYC privates, I assume) does not really hold -- nyers have a limited # of schools we can apply to, while a HS senior can apply to any of 100s of schools. Much greater opportunity for the latter to select on the basis of philosophy (for example, most likely students who apply to Wesleyan are going to be comfortable with its "lefty, crunchy" aspects.) A lot depends on the personalities of the kids, which you have no control over, so it's hard to say. My brother & sister are 2 years apart, not that close as kids, not close at all now. My sister & I are 17 years apart and incredibly close. That said, I'm glad my kids are growing up w/ siblings in the house together at the same time (I was raised like an only). If you are already considering Montclair, it sounds like you would like Glen Ridge, too. It's the next town over, but much smaller (about 7,000 people) and with better schools (consistently ranked in top ten in NJ). Doesn't have as much diversity as Montclair, but starting to change. It has a direct train into the city and for 2M$ you would get one of the nicest houses in town. [ Reply | More ]

have you considered Park Slope, Brooklyn? we live there with 3 dcs, good schools, very easy commute, and there are great opportunities for the kids (for ex one of mine just got into Stuyvesant). In many ways PS is a paradise for families. My dh works LONG hours and we would see so little of him if we moved to suburbs. These days Brooklyn feels like a suburb, but with many advantages of Manhattan so nearby. We live in a townhouse but if I could do it again I would choose a full service coop. i like it if it's a family name, as long as the middle name is a definite girls name, kwim? [ Reply | More ]

if it is a legit family name it is okay, otherwise a bit pretentious [ Reply | More ]

np: if your weird line extends that far i'd not consider you "very" traditional [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Where should I move? Love the City but with 3 dc it's time to move out. Looking for good schools, nice house (but don't need mansion or lots of land) for about $2M, and nice community where I wouldn't feel like a freak because I WOH. As a family we are politically liberal, religious Presbyterians, dh and I both professionals, want place that will accept us but don't want overly-homogenous community. Currently considering Larchmont, Millburn, Summit, Ardlsey, Montclair, maybe Scarsdale (too snobby or intense?) or Pelham. Suggestions about these or other towns? Thanks! 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

We are in Larchmont (moved here 4 years ago) and really love it. You could get a nice house for $2 million. The commute to mid town is great! [ Reply | More ]

The schools are great, Mamaroneck school district. With $2M to spend I will also consider Mamaroneck (Rye Neck or Mamaroneck school district) by the water if I were you. [ Reply | More ]

If you are a top tier or bottom tier student, great school. If you are middle the road, can get lost in shuffle (which can be said for many larger schools). Great teachers, sports, theater programs, more diversity than many other top communities (which i consider a plus) [ Reply | More ]

My brother and SIL moved to Scarsdale 3 years ago. It is fine, but they miss a "neighborhood" feel. Also, people who are not Jewish may feel a bit out of place. [ Reply | More ]

Montclair schools are not great, I wouldn't go to Scarsdale for diversity they have some Asians but not other monorities. Larchmont is not that diverse try Mamaroneck instead. Ardsley has good schools but a terrible commute (they don't have their own train station) and crazy traffic. Ardlsey on Hudson station is Irvington not Ardlsey. [ Reply | More ]
