what? you don't think staying at home with her dc is work? it's a hell of a lot of work. Even if she did have a job outside the home the parents should be parents. They should work as a team. If one is sick the other takes over. Why have this BUY mentality..let's just hire help and not have to worry about being a parent? He needs to be a dad and a husband. If the roles were reversed, I'm sure he would be pissed and annoyed she was leaving him to deal alone [ Reply | More ]

I was a SAHM mom for 2 yrs. Sorry, it's not that hard. Yes, you need a break once and awhile but it's nothing like working at a law firm. Plus, since her DH is the only breadwinner, there is extra pressure for him to succeed at his job (heard about the biglaw layoffs lately?). [ Reply | More ]

oh please. Just because you had a good time at home for 2 yrs and found it easy doens't mean your experience is everyones experience. I stay at home with 2 dc and am disabled (with no help). When I am too sick, my dh steps up to the plate. He's my dh, he's their father. Why shouldn't he be helpful when he's needed. Yes he works long hours too but so what? That's part of being a parent [ Reply | More ]

I am the OP and He is not the only breadwinner, that is beyond the point and I am sorry that you think he deserves special treatment because he "works" harder by getting to leave the house and sleep through the night while tend to sick child because I have a flexible schedule. I work every bit as hard as he does and he has never even spent more than 5 hours with his dd without help from his mother, so I don't think he thinks this is an easier job. [ Reply | More ]

If the situation isn't working, then she needs to fix it - not just add another DB to the mix. If DH won't step up and she's overwhelmed, then she should arrange for a sitter/nanny a few hours a week. I hate it when ppl complain about the status quo but just keep maintaining it anyway. np: He's probably a creature of habit. If you usually seem like you can handle everything and don't regularly ask him for help, then he's probably more likely to think you can still get by. Perhaps have a serious conversation with him when he gets home about the help that you need, and perhaps enlist his help on a more regular basis so he sees 1) what it takes and 2) is used to it. (This is all based on your post above where you say you never ask for his help.) Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

Good luck. I don't get the people above. Having a job doesn't absolve a person of all responsibilities at home. That's just ridiculous. Your kid is sick, you're pregnant -- you have every right to try and enlist his help. The idea that any woman, SAHM or WOHM, should have to go it alone because the DH has a power job is stupid. Of course you ask each other for help. That is called a marriage. You're not asking him to scrub a toilet...anyway, good luck. I hope your dd feels better soon. [ Reply | More ]

I was you just a few months ago (e.g. toddler + pregnant + I was sick). I had a very, very similar situation with my DH -- we both work and he was always coming home at random times, not really helping at home, etc. With one kid, I was actually okay managing things at home, but when pregnant and sick, things were a disaster. He told me he wasn't used to my *really* needing his help. Anyway...the conversation helped a lot and things have vastly improved. I hope that you can do the same!! [ Reply | More ]

np - I think giving specific duties/suggestions is helpful. For example, I give laundry to dh. He has to do it by Saturday AM but he can squeeze it in whenever he can. Other things, like emptying the dishwasher etc. are things he can do when he can't think of anything. Guys are just different. [ Reply | More ]

totally agree with the poster above. DH's can be really blind sometimes (or in denial) (or scared shitless about all the new responsibilities) Doesn't mean they are bad people. But they need to get a swift kick in rear sometimes. It really helped me when I gave that swift kick to my DH. He totally stepped up to the plate once I was VERYVERY clear about what I needed. I wish you all the best. In the meantime, while you are sick and while your DH is integrating this new info, hire help. I hope you feel better very soon. [ Reply | More ]

((Hugs)). You know, if my husband couldn't leave work, he might also be tempted to pretend he didn't get my voicemail/email. Why? It's the male "avoid confrontation" gene, LOL. Plus, my DH might be afraid if he called me back he might have to listen to my wrath while he's sitting next to his coworkers/clients. Anyway, talk it out when he's home and tell him you are going to really NEED him to have reasonable hours when at all possible. Tell him to pack his briefcase/laptop and announce to his co-workers that he'll be working at home as leaves at 6pm. [ Reply | More ]
