[ - ] My 4yr old son has started acting out in school. He doesn't want to sleep, he runs in the hallway, pushes things around, talks back to his teachers. We also have 10 month old twins and things seemed to get worse when they started to crawl and be more present in our life. I spend most of my time with my son and, honestly, I don't know what to do next. Any advice? any other mom in the same situation, present or past? Thank you for any ideas 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

siblings without rivalry is a good book for you to have. it sounds like he is jealous and not sure how to handle the emotions he is having towards his younger sibs-kind of a natural reaction actually. I would set limits, work with him on expressing emotions in words (make sure he knows it is ok to have these emotions, but not ok to react these ways). is he in camp or some sort of activities this summer? also, even if you spend most of your time with him, you may not be as present for him as you think (not trying to insult you, just a suggestion)-kind of normalgiven that you have your hands full right now. hmm, i had a horrible sleeper, but that is pretty bad and i would say, unusual. and i agree, who can digest sleep manifestos when your'e that tired. so my questions: is dc warm enough, too warm, maybe look for things in his diet. can you try a white noise machine? what happens when dc wakes? wants to nurse? He wants us to put him back to sleep - he needs holding, jiggling, bouncing, rocking, OR nursing to get put back to sleep. He's not picky about the method, he just needs help getting back down. We tried some half-assed CIO, but gave up after he had cried for 2.5 hours (not straight, we were checking and consoling at intervals throughout). [ Reply | More ]

it may be a little young for CIO. i would just try to survive another couple of weeks and closer to 6mo do CIO again. and don't give up or it makes the whole thing a mean waste. [ Reply | More ]

that's the age when they start to realize that you'll come if they call you. that's also around the age that i started letting my dd cry a bit to see if she could settle self. started just reinserting paci and comforting a bit but walking away quickly. never picked up. eventually she learned. longest she ever cried was 30 minutes or so (not continuously - we did periodic checks on her and she'd calm down for a bit) [ Reply | More ]

will he sleep with you? i'm not a co-sleeper proponent, but when my second kid was a really bad sleeper, i just nursed him all night for weeks until he got bigger and we let him cio. at 7 mos. like i said, i'm no co-sleeper proponent, but i am in favor of everyone in the house sleeping. i did whatever it took to keep the house asleep. it's tough, but you'll get thru it. also, talk to your ped. mine had good advice about when it was appropriate to CIO, how much sleep, how much nursing, etc..... It won't be for a year, and my ped said up to 3 straight weeks of daily tylenol was fine, as long as it wasn't around the clock. Let go of your adult preferences about medication (especially in regard to such a safe drug) and relieve your child's pain, silly! Seriously, if you're in pain, especially dental pain, and need medication, I hope someone offers you a wet washcloth. Those tricks are effective - to a point. If they're not working, dose him up.
