I did a 5 night trip for work when DB was about 8 months. I decided to keep him home because I thought that he would be happier in his own place. Made sure DH was home early from work those days and put DB to bed. It was fine and actually once I got past being sad about leaving him, I had an enjoyable and more importantly, productive trip and was able to concentrate 100% on the task at hand. [ Reply | More ]

This year, because of vacations, etc, she has had a ton of time off, for which she has been paid. (I have been off at that time as well.) Because of a family illness (my family), she will have at least four more days off this week and next. Do you think I could ask her to give me a free night in exchange for this additional time off? You are not a failure. You are working your tail off to take care of your baby, and if insurance being difficult to manage made people failures, we'd ALL be flops! PLEASE tell dh. Clearly you are worried and upset, and part of his job as the dad is (m) to help you in matters botyh practical and emotional. And it's always better to have two smart heads working on a problem; he may see solutions that you don't yet. Let him on the team that is helping your baby. Have you talked to your doctor about making a case to insurance about another u/s? She may have ways of selling it as "medically necessary" that insurance will buy. Alternatively, she may be able to give you more information about why it's not "medically" necessary that might make you feel less compelled to get one. Or perhaps she'll counterpropose an amnio? That's the conclusive test, as I understand it; another u/s can't positively tell you one way or another. (Not 100% sure on this, though). Lastly (and this is the "spend money" solution) insurance can't stop you from getting an ultrasound if you feel strongly about it; they can only choose to not pay for it. If you're able to pay for it yourself, it might be worth it to you for the peace of mind. Ask your doc about that too, and please please, keep your chin up! A pos quad screen is not a diagnosis of Downs (you know that) and you can convey this to dh, as well. Bring him in to talk with the doc; the three of you are a team, and I hope you'd feel better if you had the support of your teammates. Good luck to you -- Lee [ Reply | More ]

From a family of professors above - yes, it depends on what the school "titles" them. I was using the most common phrases. What I think is pretentious is when someone who teaches one class at a community college identifies themselves at a party(m) or something as a "professor" when that's not the case. It is entirely appropriate in the actual school setting to call yourself a professor, or be titled Prof. so and so. Although my parents and everyone I know at their school are called "Dr" so and so, b/c that's their title, don't think its pretentious in the academic setting. I just mean if you are at a party and someone asks what you do, its not accurate to say you are a professor, b/c you are not unless you have been given that title. Obviousl ythis is really not a burning issue, but since someone else brought it up, whatever. [ Reply | More ]

Sounds cliche, but a cigar, a travel-sized bottle of his favorite liquor or a small bottle of champagne. But I like the above poster's suggestion. [ Reply | More ]

my dh was so worried about making sure I had everything in my hospital bag that he totally forgot to pack the things he needed -- like underwear and socks. Maybe try to anticipate the things he will need but not think of? (I also like the snacks idea) [ Reply | More ]

What about a t-shirt or cap that says something like "first time dad" or "new dad". [ Reply | More ]

Browning and St. Davids are both very traditional and I know someone whose ds is at St Davids and he loves it. He is of the studious sort. Friends have dc at Trevor Day (recent scandal aside) and they love it - I think of the 3, the least competitive to get into. Others may disagree on this assessment. [ Reply | More ]

I would think St Davids would be a bit more desireable than Browning -- there are a lot of families who choose St D's because the like the religious bit, whereas Browning probably has more who did not get into St Bernards or Buckley -- not that this is.. intended to be reflective of the academics, just the mindsets of the families [ Reply | More ]

WE looked at St. David's and Trevor. St. David's is a lovely K-8 with a fabulous building. Its very traditional, though the new headmaster has an MA in early education from Bank Street (progressive), so perhaps some interesting changes? Building is (m newly renovated and they have the most amazing chapel. Despite being a Catholic schools, I think only about 50% of boys are Catholic (i might be wrong here). Lots of European families, and a reputation for being a "nice" school. Strong athletics, and formal atmosphere. While generally not considered on the same level as St. B.'s and Collegiate academically, the boys go on to very competitive boarding and days schools. Trevor Day is very different. Co-ed through high school, has a foot in progressive (math manipulatives, etc.). They are very strong in music and technology and start foreign language in the lower school. While I believe many consider it a 2nd-3rd tier school, I know many wonderful families there that love the school. We really liked it. Very down to earth, active parent body. Informal setting. We didn't look at Browning, and don't really know anyone there, either. It is also generally considered to be lower tier than Collegiate, St. B.s, and Buckley, but also has a reputation for being very nurturing. Hope this is helpful! p.s. do these school have openings for K this Fall?? [ Reply | More ]
