Adjuncts are *NOT* professors. It drives me nuts that some ppl who happen to teach a class in continuing studies call themselves professors. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Agreed. From a child of professors. You can call yourself whatever you want, but the title is instructor. However, if you are a full prof at another campus, and you adjunct somewhere else for extra $, you are a professor, just an "adjunct professor". [ Reply | More ]

You have to look at each college's faculty list. There will be professors, instructors, lecturers, whatever. Sometimes they are adjunct profs, or adjunct lecturers, or visiting profs, if they are there full time, but only for the yr, for ex. It depend [ Reply | More ]

Adjunct professor is a job title. It is a person with a PhD who has a non-tenure-track part-time position at a university. Of course it's a professor! [ Reply | More ]

I think that's a bit much. What's wrong w/asking their students to call them Prof. so-and-so? Dr. so-and-so sounds so pretentious. I've been in academia a long time and this is really petty. [ Reply | More ]

But schools give them the title of adjunct professor, no? It's totally confusing. [ Reply | More ]

From a family of professors above - yes, it depends on what the school "titles" them. I was using the most common phrases. What I think is pretentious is when someone who teaches one class at a community college identifies themselves at a party(m) or something as a "professor" when that's not the case. It is entirely appropriate in the actual school setting to call yourself a professor, or be titled Prof. so and so. Although my parents and everyone I know at their school are called "Dr" so and so, b/c that's their title, don't think its pretentious in the academic setting. I just mean if you are at a party and someone asks what you do, its not accurate to say you are a professor, b/c you are not unless you have been given that title. Obviousl ythis is really not a burning issue, but since someone else brought it up, whatever. [ Reply | More ]

I was "visiting adjunct professor" for three years; when I talk about my past work experiences, I say I was on the [blank] faculty of [blank university]. Do I offend? [ Reply | More ]

LOL! Of course none of these people are "offensive" - Didn't I say in my post that this is hardly a burning issue? ;) Define yourself any which way! And (BTW) you were technically on the faculty, so you are not wrong! [ Reply | More ]

Not neccessarily. At many schools, the adjuncts have Ph.Ds and get the title of adjunct assistant prof. Adjuncts without Ph.Ds are "instructors." [ Reply | More ]

trust me, i don't hold myself out as a "real" professor & i tell my students NOT to call me professor such and such. my family is all academics & i'm the black sheep in a different profession who happens to teach on the side. [ Reply | More ]

I'm the poster who was "on the faculty" - the title I remember most clearly was one student called me "coach" (by accident, I think). Really made my day, since I am so uncoach-like. [ Reply | More ]
