I am almost about to cry. I amtrying to get my sono (20 week) & having such a hard time with insurance company (want to justify this sono b/c I had 2 before it) - just switched providers - everyone was on vaca - had positive for Down's on (m) quad screen - doing great with not worrying about that but I guess I was really looking forward to this sono to give me some relief - this is the 2nd one we are reschedualing b/c of all this crap - I didn't tell DH about the positive for Down's b/c I don't want him upset or worried. I am now crying - no reason. I feel like such a failure & can't even take care of my own baby [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

the secretary who runs the whole place was on vaca for 2 weeks - just got back yesterday - insurance requests a lot of info including a statement from my provider why this is medically necessary. She was delivering a baby yesterday & unable to do it - [ Reply | More ]

There are often false positives. You should tell your husband, though. It's his baby too. [ Reply | More ]

You are not a failure. You are working your tail off to take care of your baby, and if insurance being difficult to manage made people failures, we'd ALL be flops! PLEASE tell dh. Clearly you are worried and upset, and part of his job as the dad is (m) to help you in matters botyh practical and emotional. And it's always better to have two smart heads working on a problem; he may see solutions that you don't yet. Let him on the team that is helping your baby. Have you talked to your doctor about making a case to insurance about another u/s? She may have ways of selling it as "medically necessary" that insurance will buy. Alternatively, she may be able to give you more information about why it's not "medically" necessary that might make you feel less compelled to get one. Or perhaps she'll counterpropose an amnio? That's the conclusive test, as I understand it; another u/s can't positively tell you one way or another. (Not 100% sure on this, though). Lastly (and this is the "spend money" solution) insurance can't stop you from getting an ultrasound if you feel strongly about it; they can only choose to not pay for it. If you're able to pay for it yourself, it might be worth it to you for the peace of mind. Ask your doc about that too, and please please, keep your chin up! A pos quad screen is not a diagnosis of Downs (you know that) and you can convey this to dh, as well. Bring him in to talk with the doc; the three of you are a team, and I hope you'd feel better if you had the support of your teammates. Good luck to you -- Lee [ Reply | More ]

Thank you. I feel better now that I am working on the solution. Was waiting for other people to do eg secretary etc (that's why I felt like a loser - I know better to take charge of matters. I now have ins co calling MD, You are right (m) about many false positives with quad which is why I really didn't worry or tell DH - but I guess the thought in the back of my head is creeping up & I was looking forward to this settling me. Thank you all for being so nice. [ Reply | More ]

Glad you're feeling better; I do still hope you tell dh, so you're not carrying any lingering worry by yourself. But totally agree; doesn't it suck to have to depend on other folks who don't care as much as you do (nurses, secretaries, insurance reps) [ Reply | More ]

I'm so sorry. I can understand the sadness - not good to have insurance stress but with your condition plus worries about the baby, it's escalated. Stay strong. [ Reply | More ]
