[ - ] I want to lighten my hair (to help hide greys) but it is currently colored dark brown. My natural color is dark blonde. I can't afford pro color right now. What should I do to color it at home? One shade, or try a highlighting kit? I don't want to accidentally make my hair look stripey, tho....(posted on these boards since these are all I read.) 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Get it done pro, this one time. Save up if you have to. Get a good cut at the same time. Both will grow out well. THEN do it yourself. Drk Brn to Drk blonde w. hightlights is a big change. You will be very happy you did, and you will look great! [ Reply | More ]

op: yes, i agree....sigh...i just can't make myself wait. those pesky gray hairs make me feel old. and there aren't that many, but I can tell that they're there. i've been fighting grey hair since i was 25! [ Reply | More ]

Any way to embrace it? Eventually? I know a woman who was graying by 22 and it's white now, 50, she is a badass and looks awesome. Totally beautiful, confident and different from the flock. PLEASE at least do go pro for now, you will NOT regret the $$$. Find someplace you can take it from, or look into the schools. Sassoon has a good one I hear, cheap to nothing for a great hair experience. [ Reply | More ]

You should never do at home highlighting. But you could try a lighter shade single color process. I do this to cover my grays. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] BTDT moms - is it a good idea to do a separation program the summer before DC starts preschool somewhere else? Thinking DS will have trouble separating, but I don't know if it's worthwhile to do a different program before the fall as a practice round. 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Our ds is starting preschool in Sept and we have started separation classes to prepare him for this. My ds HATED the first 4 weeks when I left him at class but after that he practically knocks me over to get into the class he loves it so much. I'm sure he will still find starting preschool scary but hopefully not as bad as it would have been if we had never been separated. [ Reply | More ]

Personally I don't think it's necessary. If it were at the same school, yes. But with switching to a different place in the fall you may end up going through the process all over again. [ Reply | More ]

any good farmers markets there? grow your own herbs on the window sill- that's easy. and really, think about other areas of your life to economize. food always seems like the easiest place to cut, but personally, i think it's worth tightening the budget elsewhere in order to have higher quality food. ^^also, cook in bulk and freeze, make your own bread - try "artisan bread in 5 minutes a day," make just about anything yourself that you can. and use everything that you can from what you buy - render chicken fat for cooking, make stock from chicken carcass, etc. that kind of thing. There is an old book you might be able to get called something like "How to eat better on less money." It may be out of print but you could get it off of Amazon or something like it. Also, "Miserly Moms" is a good book and does focus on trimming food costs by shopping more strategically. [ Reply | More ]

IF you know someone who took the test this year you can ask if they still have their sample test. The DOE will send you a sample test prior to your dc taking the test, so if you don't find one its no big deal you will get to see it when the time comes. [ Reply | More ]

The DOE gave out samples along with registration of the test, I don't know if they'll give them out without registration. Google OLSTAT and you may find the general categories that will be on the test [ Reply | More ]
