any suggestions on where to live? 39F, love the outdoors/hiking, swimming, 70s temps, not religious, no DCs, not a night owl/nightlife, like folk house concerts, comedy, about $2M in savings, job would not be coming with me... may be better to ask tomorrow [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Richmond is ok but not a great place to live. It is NOT like Ashville. When we went to visit University of Richmond, they talked about how the city is improving but it still has decently high crime. [ Reply | More ]

They are all over, you can join an expat group and research. People will give you lots of good advice, but most of all you have to visit. The areas can very a lot, some are more densely populated, some not, there are the beach towns or mountain areas. But if you are looking to date, your pool will smaller I think, so the US may be a better option. [ Reply | More ]

Laurel Canyon area bc it is outdoorsy and has a fun, music/arts community; Sausalito/Mill Valley for the the same reason and better match for temperature; parts of San Diego; I would also say South Pasadena, but it is very hot there. If you are open to seasons, consider parts of Vermont, Rhode Island, Oregon, and maybe Seattle. [ Reply | More ]

op-wow, thanks! appreciate specifics. will investigate laurel canyon, sausalito, mill valley more. agree south pasadena los angeles is too hot. where in san diego? I like seasons but prefer to visit rather than live through winter-so vermont, rhode island, seattle and oregon--PNW has great hiking, so pretty! [ Reply | More ]

I'm PP, and I shouldn't have grouped PNW and east coast states togethers. If you don't have kids or are single, I would look carefully at Sausalito. It would also help to know what you are looking for other than mild weather and outdoor activities. Are you looking for a welcoming community or a lot of space, do you like certain types of people or attitudes, do you think about dating or having kids? I have some friends who don't want kids and they aren't happy living in suburbs that are centered around family life, for example. Some areas work well for singles, married couples of all ages, and families. It depends what other things you like about a place.. [ Reply | More ]

op-thanks for being so kind and helpful! a community of you? ;) "Are you looking for a welcoming community" would be nice but figure I'll be proactive in finding my people "or a lot of space" I love being able to walk so mixed use buildings or planned communities are nice. I don't mind driving, uber, public transport, bicycle so if I had to choose between hiking out my door and shops out my door no doubt I would chose hiking. As an example I like the lynn canyon area of vancouver more than downtown, not sure if that helps. "do you like certain types of people or attitudes" I thought I knew but with politics in USA now :/ "do you think about dating or having kids" dating yes, preferably 30s, not late 40s and older. kids no, starting at 30 is very different than 40 [ Reply | More ]

Plenty of places with good arts communities in LA area, but not sure why SoPas would be included, Altadena might be more appropriate for no DCs. Laurel Cyn has that musical heritage, but it's not really like that now--it's too expensive. Lots of musicians in the larger area however, and all types. The Troubadour is always a magnet. So I'd say other neighborhoods, Atwater Village, Silverlake, Echo Park, Mt Washington, etc. There are public pools and courts all over LA, same with hiking trails. [ Reply | More ]

Im from Seattle and it is a @#!$ storm here. The mayor is crazy and the city is pushing for a head tax for corporations which is driving them all out of the area. Combine that with the city throwing money at the homeless situation without any discernable progress, and Seattle's one big outdoor toilet just like SF. If you move to the Seattle area, consider the Eastside (Bellevue/Seattle/Kirkland) or even Bellingham (Closer to Vancouver, BC). [ Reply | More ]
