Found a tick on DC and it was attached. Do I need to do anything now, or just wait and see? Are those tick testing places a scam? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

don't try to pull it out and immediately go to non-covid ER or urgent care. they will pull it out there and will give antibiotics to prevent lyme disease risk. I'm not an MD but DS had a tick on him last summer and that's what we did. [ Reply | More ]

we did and they didn't keep us waiting as normally they do. didn't tell us not to come back if happens again. that was pre-covid19. if would happen again, I would take precautions (mask, gloves etc) and take DS again. [ Reply | More ]

I think this is nuts. What a waste of time/money and unnecessary risk. If over 24 hours, call pediatrician. [ Reply | More ]

actually, no. Exposing yourself to sitting in an ER and taking antibiotics unnecessarily seems much more sorry than safe. [ Reply | More ]

I agree, ERs are meant for actual emergencies. Urgent care is fine though. [ Reply | More ]

Even urgent care seems bananas to me. When I was a camp counselor I pulled them off of campers myself and then lit them on fire. [ Reply | More ]

If under 24 hours probably don't need to worry. If over than that I'd contact doc and get antibiotics. Not an MD. [ Reply | More ]

this. watch the spot, clean with alcohol, make sure you get the whole tick out. The only thing they will do is give you antibiotics, which you can do in a video consult any way. That said, I have seen a bullseye mark on my kid on a tick I swore was less than 24hrs. So if you want to be extra careful, just get the antibiotics. For small kids, it's a 10 day course. No need to save or test, just assume they all have it, it's a question of did it get into your system or not. [ Reply | More ]

Call your dc's doc. Last time I had an attached tick, I took the precautionary antibiotic. It's only one pill. (At least that's what it was a few years ago.) Doc can prescribe over the phone. No need to go anywhere, esp. not ER. Also I'm not someone who ever wants to take antibiotics but Lyme sucks, so weigh that. [ Reply | More ]

I've had two virtual visits with my PCP and I love it! I emailed her ahead, described my issue so she already knew what it was about - the whole thing took 5 minutes and I didn't even have to put real pants on. [ Reply | More ]

Vermont ER doctor mom. If it was there less than 36 hours, remove and get on with life. If you live in an endemic area, it is engorged and potentially there 36 hours or greater, get a prophylactic dose of doxycycline. [ Reply | More ]
