My 16yo DS, who has always been sweet, polite and an excellent student, met up with his friends at the park yesterday and came home red-eyed. He admitted he smoked and vaped weed with his friends, hated it, and will probably never do it again. I'm just at a loss. He really has always been such a good boy. This is the first time he's done something like this. How to handle? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Tell him you are happy he told you. That he should remember how he feels. Talk about peer pressure. And then move on. [ Reply | More ]

Thank him for being honest, keep an eye out going forward, and it's 100% normal for a teen to experiment with pot. [ Reply | More ]

Nothing to handle here. Best case scenario frankly. I would may be just mention: well, you lived and learned. [ Reply | More ]

Every kid tries something. Be glad it was this. [ Reply | More ]

Every single kid has experimented. At least he's close enough to you to tell you about it. [ Reply | More ]

just be on the look out that this was not a once and done type of thing, remind him of the possible effects, etc. [ Reply | More ]

And he's still a good boy. He's human, he is going to experiment. This is the outcome you want. [ Reply | More ]

Hey - he shared with you! He is a good kid. He would have tried pot at some point, most likely. Hopefully he can stick to his guns and avoid it in the future. [ Reply | More ]

So while I would tell him that I appreciated his honesty, I would also let him know how surprised I was. And if this was because of peer pressure, we would need to have a talk about choosing better friends. But I’m not a mom who wants my kids to think of me as a friend. [ Reply | More ]

be supportive. this is totally normal behavior that a good chunk of middle schoolers engage in. have lots of open conversations about abusing drugs and alcohol that are realistic. [ Reply | More ]
