Got our pre-K letter -- didn't get in. This really sucks. Now we have to shell out 20K for private preschool. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

That's true. But it is financially tough for us. [ Reply | More ]

that really sucks. I'm sorry. There are few reasons that I'm glad we left the city for the burbs, but the school issue tops the list. [ Reply | More ]

That's too bad, but you really can't count on public pre-k. On the bright side, there are many preschools and preschool alternatives that don't cost $20K. Ours costs half that for five full days. [ Reply | More ]

Are you in Manhattan? I haven't heard of any 5 day, FT preschools in Manhattan that cost that little. [ Reply | More ]

No you don't. Your kid doesn't NEED pre-K, unless he's "slow". [ Reply | More ]

They don't all cost that much. If you don't buy into the whole status thing, you can find great programs for less. [ Reply | More ]

Well, the OP just got rejected from her public preK, so by definition that is no longer an option for her. [ Reply | More ]

So what's the big deal anyway? Mom will have to teach the kid how to use crayons and eat cookies on her own? [ Reply | More ]

Oh, come on. There's much more to preschool than that. I'm not saying it's mandatory, but my dd had a terrific time in preschool, and we never could have offered her what they do, for so many reasons. Plus that's where most of her friends are from. [ Reply | More ]

I took my DD to PS 188 ( Across the street from NEST ) and I don't live in Manhattan and they took her. THey go from 8- 3 and have after school until 6! and it is free. Yeah there are projects all around, but she learned had a great teacher who really exposed them to a lot of books, activities letters and sounds, and the most important part - social interactions.
