so sick of this -- if you think anderson moms suck, then don't send your child to the school, if he or she happens to get accepted, which is pretty low odds anyway. my child goes there, is very happy, is learning more than i could have imagined, and i am thrilled with the school, the administration, and the parent body. if you don't think you would be too, then no one is forcing you to send your child there. maybe what needs to happen is the anderson moms change their tune, and start behaving like they don't own the school. the exclusive attitude and entitlement are offputting. same thing happened at nest, and they were put down a notch. now they are in line with the reality, and things are better. I am simply commenting on the face presented to the world by these two schools. i am at neither, but my impression from the posts here, and other info, is that nest became too full of itself and powerful in a corrupt way. Anderson is at risk of this (or at least appearing this way) given the posts I have seen here. [ Reply | More ]

I can't speak to Anderson but what you describe at NEST has little to do with the NEST I've seen in the last two years. I read the NY Mag article, too. If that article accurately describes anything it is a school (and a parent body) which just no longer exists. [ Reply | More ]

I think most of the "crazy parents" were crazy because the DOE was threatening to put another school in the building with NEST. (Why DOE wouldn't just increase enrollment at NEST I never understood and was never asked in those articles.) Of the really militant parents, some left NEST in protest. (One article says the child of the ex-pres of the PTA left for a private high school.) Some became less active (most/all(?) of the PTA resigned in protest a few years ago. I don't know. The parents I meet there are just your normal run of the mill crazy NYC parents. [ Reply | More ]

not really. i am just making an observation about the posts/info presented about these schools. the stuff about nest is old, and I believe they have turned around and gotten with the program. Anderson posters do seem to have that same fervor that got nest in trouble. often it is directed at other parents/kids (not really gifted, not chosen by onsite so not gifted, teachers are outraged by olsat, and on and on). that sort of thing is damaging to the school because the protest goes against the very people who will support it in the years to come. i have no idea if it is like this IRL, but the posts here are not flattering. I said anderson posters. i am assuming they are parents in the school, but many of them claim that the administration there is fighting against the doe re: new admissions procedures. I think that the battle is problematic because it goes against new families who will be the supporters and community of the school. not sure what point you are making actually. Again, I am not there, but i am commenting on the face anderson posters are putting out to the public on UB. for all I know there is one crazy zealot posting this stuff, and the people at the school are just happy their kids are there. But I think the stuff posted here is damaging. I think someone recently lamented that people were becoming "more conservative." Perhaps there are those who get off fighting the system, but have no idea that they are actually damaging the school. And finally, perhaps sour grapes accounts for much of the stuff we see here. I think it is probably a mix. btw, i have no beef with these schools and do not have a dc at either. just joining in the conversation, as I think its an interesting problem. [ Reply | More ]

But you seem to 1. accept without question that they are accurate; and 2. think that they are indicative of the parent body as opposed to just a few wingnuts on UB. I present (I think) as a pretty level headed person. I post on UB fairly often that the NEST described here is nothing like the NEST I see every day when I drop my kid off. Yet on a regular basis people post back, "If the NEST parents are so normal how come the principal had to call the police on them." My choice is made and I'm happy with it. I feel badly for the people here trying to figure out what to do for their kids and getting this third hand, tired information from people who present it as current/gospel. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Homboms on the Upper East Side has the WORST customer service of any place I've ever shopped. I have been a frequent customer since before my daughter was born (I'm a teacher and have purchased games and books there, as well as gifts for other children) and in the past 6 months have spent quite a bit of money there. Last Wednesday I purchased a teething toy that vibrates. It worked great until Thursday morning when it stopped vibrating. We were away all weekend and I went in today, expecting them to kindly offer me an other toy. Instead, one of the co-owners (who are identical twins in there 30s who still dress alike, but that is an entirely different issue!) screamed at me that it was a health issue that they couldn't take it back because it had been in my daughters mouth. I told her that I recognized that, however the product was no useless since it no longer worked. She said if I wanted another one I could, "buy another toy!" I was absolutely shocked and told her I'd never go back. In addition to being overpriced, I can't imagine that a store on the Upper East Side, which is infested with children and babies, would treat a customer so horribly. If you shop there, please mention this post and hopefully they will learn their lesson! 29 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Of course I produced a proof of purchase: the receipt and the cardboard packaging the toy came in that also had the store's price tag on it. This was one of the owners that screamed at me. She wouldn't even look at the receipt, claiming they couldn't take it back b/c it had been in my daughter's mouth. That is NOT on their return/exchange policy that is posted behind the counter; she made it up on the spot. The smart thing to do would have been to hand me another one and return the defective toy to the manufacturer. Had she done that, I'd be posting about what a nice shop they run. However, I'm now spreading the word to all who shop there...avoid it! [ Reply | More ]

Each year I buy 20 gifts there (for my son's class) and the twins treat everyone like crap. They had a fight with the woman in front of me and then they wrapped a gift for me worse than my 4 yo son would have done and were to say the least...the opposite of customer service. I had an awful experience in Homboms this morning. I went in to buy a gift and told one of the twins I wanted to spend $20. This is for a birthday gift for a child in my DS's day care class whom I do not know. I was told that there are no nice gifts in that price range and if I wanted to spend $50, I could get a much better present. I was absolutely stunned. First off, $20 was the amount I wanted to spend and if they had nothing in that range, or a limited selection, they could have simply showed me what they had and let me choose. To tell me that that was an unacceptable amount and to judge me was downright embarrassing and disgusting. I have shopped there many times over the past few years and like the OP...will NEVER go back. Those twins are going to kill a good business if they don't get off their high horse! [ Reply | More ]

Lulu's is HORRIBLE and very, very expensive. Ordered a cake from them for my son's birthday party and they forgot to put us on the bakery schedule so there was no cake for us to pick up. They then promised to make it in an hour and deliver it to our house. Needless to say, they were late and when we called to find when the cake would show up, we couldn't get a straight answer. They ended up being 45 minutes from the time promised. We ended up being late to my son's birthday party. We only had a 90 minutes time slot and had 24 kids, 18 parents waiting for us. To top it off, the cake had the wrong filling. Then, when we called to talk to the manager, he blew us off, so we paid $130 for a 10" round, 2 layer cake and had them ruin my son's birthday party instead. [ Reply | More ]

My two are very different and my second seems to be exceptionally bright & precocious. But they are both so precious and so unique, I don't see the point in comparing them much. I mean I do think in my head "wow, DS wasn't saying that at her age" but he was doing other things that were cool. I think the whole gifted thing just gets so overblown sometimes and other qualities get the shaft. So I guess I'm saying, just let it go and let this little one show you who he is on his own. I think it is so normal to compare them in our minds, but it's important not to do it to/in front of them. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I am 3 weeks postpartum and want to get cracking on losing the baby weight. How much can I safely lose each week without reducing my milk supply too much? 1-2lbs? 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

How much did you gain, and how much came of with delivery...just curious, due very soon and can't imagine ever being thin again, 35 weeks, 30 lbs so far. I think 1-2 lbs is always the answer to that question. [ Reply | More ]

I gained 32 lbs, but dc was 2 weeks overdue. I've lost about 15 so far (the baby's actual weight, plus a lot of fluid from what I can tell) [ Reply | More ]

first you are nuts for wanting to start now. enjoy your body and your baby! but if you must, WW is great and takes into consideration nursing moms. [ Reply | More ]

I am thoroughly enjoying my baby, but not my body. I am too small for maternity and too big for any of my regular clothes and cannot afford to buy a new wardrobe, so it's time to take some of this off slowly. [ Reply | More ]

Why is she nuts for wanting to start now? By the time the baby is born isn't evryone excited to get that weight off and enjoy the baby too, I think you can do both, right? [ Reply | More ]

I went on WW at about 8 weeks postpartum. 6 months later, I have lost 28 lbs - 15lbs was baby weight so I am 13 lbs lighter than my pre preg weight. WW works, but it is not a quick fix - you will lose approx 1-2 lbs per week. Good program and i would recc it to anyone. Good Luck! [ Reply | More ]

You mean in the passenger seats? You can have them disengaged by the dealer. Not sure you'd want to mess around with the non dealer mechanic [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I've heard that it's safer to disengage the back seat airbags with kids in the car. I guess I will call dealer to consult with them. [ Reply | More ]
