Starting to remodel a house. Where do I start and who do I need to hire? Do I engage an architect and then a designer? No clue and it seems overwhelming. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It depends on how much remodeling you are doing. If you are making additions to total square footage, moving walls or any structural work, get an architect as you'd probably have to file with your local municipality. If it's all just finishes, furniture, cabinetry work it might be better to work with a designer who has architectural skills. There are lots of "designer"s out there who can't present any drawings to you, nor plan say, the spacing of fixtures - they just pick textiles and furniture (i.e. glorified decorators). Work with someone who's past work you admire. [ Reply | More ]
