I just read the NYT article about college professors who dont want to teach in person. I dont understand. It's not like teaching kindergarten, they can maintain social distance easily. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Even if they promise not to, college kids will go to parties, to bars, etc. and will most likely carrying the virus back to class. Maintaining social distancing "easily" is not a given on many campuses that already operate at full capacity in normal times. Where I teach for example, buildings are old, and something as simple as the width of some hallways is a problem. [ Reply | More ]

Unlike kindergarteners, college students can replicate their experience online. Plus 40+ people talking in a room is unsafe. It’s all about the air, and universities are doing little to assure us profs that they are thinking about air quality in our classrooms. My own school does not have windows that you can open. And god knows what fresh air intake looks like in the HVAC. [ Reply | More ]

NP. It's nice to hear you're so concerned about the working conditions of grocery store workers. I'm sure there are ways you can contribute to helping them organize, rather than using them as a weird argument that nobody else should demand safer conditions ever. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, trying to use workers as a tool to control other workers is pretty nasty. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you! I'm not a professor but I'm SO SICK of this "grocery store clerks did it" argument. [ Reply | More ]

Yep. And it's never grocery workers making it. It's privileged people who benefited from grocery workers staying at work while they stayed home, and now they want to use it as a wedge to guilt trip whatever other group they feel should RTW. [ Reply | More ]

Exactly. What they really mean is, "Grocery workers sheltered me from being inconvenienced, so now I expect you to do the same." [ Reply | More ]

I am a college prof. Here's a deal: I will return F2F and teach the children of grocery workers, nurses, delivery drivers, restaurant workers. That would reduce the density of my classrooms down to a sensible level, and I bet family members of essential workers take the virus a hell of a lot more seriously, too. [ Reply | More ]

college campuses are like cruise ships, except the major of the population, 18-23 year olds, think they aren't vulnerable and will absolutely ignore social distancing rules. Look at all the college athletes who have now tested positive. It will be like that but on a much larger scale. [ Reply | More ]

Another prof here, and I wanted to go back to the classroom. I hate Zoom teaching. [ Reply | More ]

It's because college professors are generally introverts who would rather have their faces in a book in far off corner of the library anyway. Zoom fits this personality well, and why would they want to interact if they don't have to. [ Reply | More ]

It's because it's unnecessary. College students can learn online, precisely because it's not like kindergarten. Maybe labs etc are a little different, but for most lecture/seminar courses, there is no reason to return in person yet. And we should all be avoiding unnecessary contact/exposure. [ Reply | More ]

It is much like elementary and high schools, people are talking about risks from the students perspective but it is a job site as well. How to keep them safe is important. And classrooms at most universities are designed to hold twenty five and can now safely hold six to nine. If you are expected to teach one hundred students a term, it is far better to teach four online classes than ten to fifteen in person ones. [ Reply | More ]
