Divorced mom here. What kind of advice are you looking for? Will you come into a windfall and you're not sure how to invest it? [ Reply | More ]

My attorney, and soon to be ex husband, are both wanting me to suggest what I want financially and how to structure it. Yes this will be a large amount of money maybe not UB huge but more all at once than I personally dealt with before. I am scared about starting over midlife and with the way the world is right now. I filed when I was 51 so I understand your concerns. Do you have your own attorney? Unless your soon to be ex is the one rare generous individual who will give you what you want, it will come down to what the law and precedent say you can get. I can pm you the name of a financial planner who has advised lottery winners on what to do with their windfall. Post a "burner" email address here and I'll send you his name. [ Reply | More ]

You also need a very savvy tax person. All dollars are not created equal, look carefully at adjusted basis of everything. What property and money will be worth down the road really matters as well as how they will be taxed (cap gains versus regular income.) Don't take deferred money even if it's more as you don't want to have to chase after it. Get a life insurance policy on DH but make sure you own it. Make sure you're the beneficiary of any pensions, file the proper papers so company knows. Try to estimate what you will need going forward; no ability to reduce money if income goes down.
