Help! DS (10) is mildly on the spectrum (probably would have been Aspergers earlier). He’s awkward enough to not be able to make friends on his own and self aware enough to be sad about it. What do normal 10 year olds do for fun? Trying to help him get interested in things that might give him something in common with his classmates. Thank you. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Sports and Minecraft. Also, if he can find his "thing" outside of school, that helps a lot...ideally an activity that stresses inclusivity. One idea is Boy Scouts. BTW the Boy Scouts are undergoing a major transformation (girls can now join, too). [ Reply | More ]

In our 4th grade there are a lot of overlapping groups, Fortnite crew, Minecraft crew, Switch, Magic cards, overlapping with people's outside stuff, like one kid we recognized from sports, one who loves bugs. Re. scouts, see also alternative scout groups like www.bpsa-us.org -- the boy scouts still have a lot of crazy history with abuse and cover-ups and are very church-affiliated if church is not a match. But only if your kid likes the idea :) of scouting and/or you are ready to bet your time on it. The key thing is that he gets to stretch in whatever area he really likes, b/c that is where he's likely to feel best, experience mastery, find people he wants to talk to. I have a nerdlet and have been fascinated by neuropsych testing--like look up Devon Maceachron https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWxmEv7fOFY. I was just starting to watch this talk by someone who is very clear about the emotional and relationship components of adhd (brain imaging and other recent science makes clear adhd is related to autism) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzhbAK1pdPM I also like: the social skills picture book, though it will not seem very useful to a high-functioning 10 y.o. it does have pictures of things like some kids leaving a conversation b/c another kid is boring them, and that can be useful to flip through and talk through. A prop. Sorry that turned out to be a long rant! [ Reply | More ]
