All this debate about private schools opening is silly. If the state allows schools to open the HAVE to provide in person schooling or they will get sued left and right. They also HAVE TO provide a remote option for at risk families. They are beholden to the parent body who has paid tuition NOT the DOE. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Have any private schools said they will not open IF the state allows it? I feel like that's the big if though. I don't know that they HAVE to provide a remote option though--just as they can say they are not set up to accommodate certain disabilities, if they are willing to relinquish that family's fees and go to their waitlist, I think they can refuse to provide remote tuition. There was one unconfirmed report here that Trinity was planning to be fully remote for a year, but I don't believe it. I think all have said they'll be at least hybrid, pending state approval. [ Reply | More ]

I don’t agree. We’ve paid for next year but will no be back in the city for the school year. We plan to use the remote learning feel safer outside of nyc. [ Reply | More ]

Have you been told for sure that there is a fully remote option? [ Reply | More ]

Not OR, but wouldn't it be in the school's interest to offer this? If some families stay remote it eases density. [ Reply | More ]

Depends on the numbers, I think. If there are, say, 20 kids and 2 teachers in a first grade class, and half or close to it want to stay remote, then that helps the school and they can devote one teacher to the remote track. But if seventeen families want to come back in person, they really need two in-person groups, and then who is responsible for remotely teaching the three? [ Reply | More ]

I wonder if any of the schools with smaller student bodies have considered teaming up. eg. if Brearley, Spence and Chapin each have 3-4 families per grade wanting to stay remote, they could run an interschool remote class. [ Reply | More ]

3-4 per grade? Way off-- try 3-4 per class at minimum! [ Reply | More ]

NP -- my understanding of the remote option is (a) it is for children who at high risk or live with someone who is at high risk and (b) it will mean remoting into the actual classroom, not a separate teacher or separate learning plan. All our classrooms have smartboards. Any remote children will be on google meets on the smart board. [ Reply | More ]

OR it’s unclear but highly likely as other families are doing the same thing, either way we’ll sit the year out. Not too worried about it but have already paid. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I want to sit out a few months and then return. I don’t want to be gone the whole year - this could improve at some point and maybe kids aren’t having to be trapped under masks & having no real art class. [ Reply | More ]

Our private sent a note explicitly saying there will be no remote option and you cannot return mid year. [ Reply | More ]

Is that HM? I heard they were saying that, but I didn't know if there are others taking that approach also. [ Reply | More ]
