I would like to compare black and hispanic kids at SHS back when they were diverse compared to today but INCLUDE the selective charters, prep for prep, teak, Oliver, etc kids. I think there are just as many high achieving black and hispanic kids, they have just opted out of the public system when they were given an option [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

There is a group of families who now spend thousands and 12months prepping their 7 th grader for the test. Back when, it was based more on merit - which would be more diverse, and not who spent most private tutors! We know several who paid $200+ for per hour for private tutoring! It not opting out, it’s about not spending $5000 and tons of hours on prep [ Reply | More ]

It is also about having access and knowing about programs. Prep for Prep is an amazing program but many parents don't know. [ Reply | More ]

I’m not sure if it depends on the school but for my DS we were contacted by the school counselor. He was selected to go through the process because of his test scores and grades so even if you didn’t know you’d be informed if your DC qualifies. [ Reply | More ]

There is definitely a large cohort of kids at these schools who were just prepped to death and are not all that bright - no creativity, no spark, no deep thoughts, no writing skills. Just very conscientious, very hardworking. [ Reply | More ]

On the contrary, it's often children of working class and/or immigrant families. [ Reply | More ]

DH and I were literally just talking about this. He went to an SHS in the 80s and most of his friends were POC (he is biracial). Back then you went to your local public elementary and middle, then took the test (nobody prepped as crazy as they do now so it was a more even playing field). Now there is more school choice and you're seeing more and more black and hispanic families opt into charters or parochial schools rather than send their kids to subpar neighborhood schools. Kids didn't need to prep, every single ES and MS was tracked with an SP program, and that fed the SHS high schools. When those were removed from minority neighborhoods, the pipeline disappeared too. [ Reply | More ]

This. I was in G&T. Hunter for MS - I didn’t go because of distance and testing with no prep for SHSAT. [ Reply | More ]

If they still had SP in our district, we wouldn't have sent kids to SHS. [ Reply | More ]

+1000. And even in elementary school when classes were tracked, each year kids went in and out of the top class - your fate wasn't decided by one G&T test at age 4. Studies showed that when kids in every single school even in minority and poor neighborhoods were tracked, SHS were much more diverse. There is a direct correlation between removing tracking and the SHS becoming segregated. [ Reply | More ]

very true, I've seen many examples of high achieving black and Hispanic students choosing full ride at private and boarding schools over SHS. Prep for Prep website boasts about their results: https://www.prepforprep.org/program/placement [ Reply | More ]

I agree. I wasn't even planning on taking the test for SHS bc I wasn't a very good test taker, but I was a very good student so my school counselor recommended these programs to my mom. We applied to 3 and I was accepted by one of them and was able to secure a scholarship to boarding school, which was great bc my then zoned high-school was horrible. [ Reply | More ]
