What if private schools can meet the safety/distancing standards to open in person by fall but publics can’t? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Then private schools resume and public schools do not, I assume. It is not an even playing field - private schools tend to have smaller class sizes, more teacher per student, and the financial means (and space) to make safety/distancing possible with some changes/upgrades, while public schools have larger classes, fewer teachers per student, and they lack the financial means, especially in low-income areas. Simple. Private schools reopen. That's only 5% of the total student population in NYC. Public schools continue with distance learning. [ Reply | More ]

I think the way it is supposed to work is that each school or school district submits plans to the governor's office and those plans need to be approved. I'm sure some will be approved and some will not. It may even be building by building. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think this will happen en masse. It would be a huge outcry. I say this as a mom with kids in private. Would be super super not fair. IN other news, I dont get why we can't put our kids in some kind of daily all in one disposable suit and mask. I get that is insane but everything is insane. [ Reply | More ]

Why is it super super super not fair? It's not a matter of privilege. Plenty of people on FA in private. It's a matter of having the least number of children have to suffer from all remote. [ Reply | More ]

It is definitely a matter of privilege. There is a small minority of FA kids in private schools and the rest are wealthy (and my kids are in private schools). But that being said, if private schools can open safely, then there is no point keeping kids home out of some kid of misguided "solidarity." I personally hope all schools can open but you need to do it safely. [ Reply | More ]

Privates are much better equipped for remote. I think they'll lean that way for safety reasons. [ Reply | More ]
