Can anyone give me some ideas for a day trip out of NYC that is socially distanced? Feeling antsy, want a change of scenery for a bit, but haven't been out and don't know what's been closed or is too crowded to be safe right now. Bonus points if you've gone there lately and can report on conditions. TIA. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I have a 10 year old and go to Harriman all the time. We actually went on a great, easy, deserted trail last weekend. It was a section of the Long Path between St. John’s church and Big Hill campground. Here's link: https://imgur.com/a/OMHNYHJ. Another alternative is a smaller park like Fahnestock. [ Reply | More ]

OR: There are a lot of lovely, closer places in Jerz, but you will get more foot traffic there. Going further out to these larger parks will help with that. Going to other trails at Harriman are going to be tricky. Parking lots are kind of a zoo b/c they've closed so many entrances and lots in order to keep park traffic down. So, the trail I described above it really awesome. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Thank you! Will check that out. A easy deserted trail sounds like just what we need now. [ Reply | More ]

Easy trails and close to the city is South Mountain in NJ. Also the Paterson Falls. No idea how busy they are right now. [ Reply | More ]

Given the ages of your kids, I'm guessing they aren't sleeping in. As long as you go early, nothing is crowded. [ Reply | More ]

Check https://www.alltrails.com/ It's like yelp for hiking trails. People post about how well or poorly hikers are social distancing. [ Reply | More ]
