Thinking about purchasing a second home (rent in NYC) if the price is right. Our friends/family live on LI but the areas are really expensive and competitive right now with bidding. Would you consider somewhere off the beaten path where we can get more for our money, even though we wouldn't know anyone there? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

We bought our place without knowing a single person anywhere nearby. Now, 8 years later, we have discovered lots of people we know from the city who have places close enough that they are the same train. Pick a spot you like and you will find people who are simpatico. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Normally this would be our first choice before buying, but renting is nearly impossible now. [ Reply | More ]

Ok. I would be hesitant to buy if it were me. I have a radius within which I would buy and it’s near where I grew up. Outside of this- no. [ Reply | More ]

What is your goal/expectations for this property? To get away from it all on the weekends, or have lots of activities in the summertime? How old are your DCs? [ Reply | More ]

After 6 full summers on the north fork, we bought in a small town on the south shore a little before the Hamptons. Great little house on the water. Beautiful neighborhood. Good amenities. One huge drawback is that we are surrounded by Trumpsters. It’s not a huge deal for us as we don’t socialize much, my husband is an introvert and I bring in my friends. But it’s hard for the kids.
