Trying to get a sense of how people handle grocery shopping at this point. Do you restrict how often you shop? Do you wipe down anything afterward? Or are you pretty much back to pre-pandemic normal? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I still wipe down the cart handle. I don't have contactless pay set up, so I just use my credit card in the machine. Figure I don't handle CC again til the next time I shop so if any cooties on it, they'll just die out. [ Reply | More ]

Frankly, people should wipe down cart handles all winter every year just due to flu season. This is a new habit I think I'll be maintaining. Same with avoiding hand-shaking. That's a social convention that should just die out. [ Reply | More ]

I still refuse to go to a grocery store: I get everything delivered via Instacart. However, I am much less obsessive about wiping it down or avoiding touching other things if I've touched unwiped groceries. The science is becoming clearer that you catch the disease from people, not objects or surfaces. [ Reply | More ]

Wondering why you don't go to the grocery store at this point. Just curious about how you view the decision. I was ordering for a while, but recently started going to the store. In NYC. [ Reply | More ]

Just seems like an unnecessary risk. Instacart is working fine for us, why abandon something that works for something that carries additional risk? [ Reply | More ]

np. I get weary of other people picking my groceries. I end up with produce I would have chosen, bread that will expire in 4 days, etc. Plus I've seen the way that many of the shoppers operate and handle food. Not the way I would. [ Reply | More ]

I trust myself more than someone shopping for me. When I go to the store, some of the most irresponsible people I see are some of the professional shoppers (definitely not all of them. Some seem very good). But a fair number don't follow basic social distancing. I get it. They have to shop really fast. Many are young. Also feel they may be more likely to come to work if they or someone in their life has been exposed because of really needing the money every week. [ Reply | More ]

Sooooo... the store employees who stock the shelves and ring up your stuff.... they don't need the money, right? They would NEVER come to work if they or someone in their life had been exposed. Same for all your fellow shoppers in the store. Everyone would do the responsible thing and self-quarantine, right? None of those customers would DARE step foot in the store if they had been exposed or weren't feeling 100%. LOL. The lies we tell ourselves. [ Reply | More ]

Soooo . . . I'm talking about the difference between me handling food and a personal shopper handling all my food. Can you grasp that? Maybe not. I'd rather shop myself. As for the rest of the store, the Whole Foods I go to actually has very good protocols for how the cashiers and employees handle everything. I've actually been impressed. Pexiglass to protect the cashier, masks, employees constantly cleaning as they work. They don't let many people in at one time, so it's easy to keep a distance from the other people. [ Reply | More ]

Sooo... how do you think your food magically ended up at Whole Foods in the first place? How did it arrive at the store? How did it arrive on the shelf? Nobody else touched it? Everybody who handled it was guaranteed to be covid-free and properly masked? LOL. [ Reply | More ]

Again, since you seem very dense, Whole Foods has many strict safety protocols. They personal shoppers do not. Believe me, if you saw how they operate, you'd get it. But, hide in your rich bubble! Be sure not to go outside. [ Reply | More ]

+1000 Instacart and Peapod (Stop & Shop) have been awesome. I haven't set foot in a store in 3 months now! At the peak of this I was wiping down religiously but I've stopped doing that. You can't eliminate every single risk from your life, but this is a simple way to eliminate a weekly one. For me the quality has been terrific. I think I got one bad pineapple the whole time I've been doing this. [ Reply | More ]

+1 The person above is arguing that she doesn't want the instacart shopper touching her items. It's better to be in an enclosed store with many other people (never mind all the people who just left, all the stuff to touch? Seriously? That's like a festival of airborne and surface exposure. Pre-pandemic normal for me was a Sunday stock-up trip for the week, and that hasn't changed at all (other than buying MORE than we used to because all 4 of us are eating 3 meals and snacks at home now, when before it was just dinner). DH is insistent on wiping things down (so I let him do it, still does), but I was never concerned with that. Wear a mask, sanitize immediately after using the self checkout, then wash my hands when I get home. [ Reply | More ]

We live in Manhattan and I've been ordering my groceries for years. I've been more mindful with it these past few months trying to make sure we don't run out of anything - pre-Covid it was so easy to pop into the corner market and get anything I forgot or a different ingredient if I changed my mind about dinner. Really trying to plan now to avoid the grocery as much as possible. It's a very tiny, crowded place and it makes me nervous. I stopped wiping things down in May. [ Reply | More ]

Im in Park Slope. Have been doing Fresh Direct this entire time. Once a week. I wipe down everything (mostly the milk containers, plastic packages of meat. I rub them with dishsoap in the sink, and rinse). Its seems that fewer people are infected now, so the chances are lower then a month ago, but all it takes is one contact. Also, because of the protests, i think the next 3 weeks will have a lot of asymptomatic spreaders, like we had mid-March. If in a month the infections in NYC havent gone up, I will reconsider this and feel a LOT more comfortable being out. [ Reply | More ]

I go when I need to but since we are home and I have a moment once in a while to plan, I need to go less often. I go, wear a mask, get what I need as expediently as I can (not walking down aisles more than once) and I use an app to scan as I go, so I can swipe and leave. I don't bother washing anything by my hands. [ Reply | More ]
