Surfing moms: 15 yo DD wants lessons in the Hamptons. How safe is it? She has been swimming since she was little and is a good swimmer. Anything else to watch out for? She will get 3-4 lessons and then surf on her own. Thx [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It's a fun hobby but takes a bit to get used to. It's not like other sports where you can go out anytime you want and can practice all day, you have to wait for the right waves and low tide. And sometimes the waves are too big/too small to even go out for 30 minutes. But if she has patience and puts in the effort she'll get the hang of it. In terms of safety, it's safe but make sure she always surfs with at least one other person or someone sits on the beach watching her. Even if there is a lifeguard. No matter how good you are you can still get hit in the head with a board and drown. But surfing with a buddy will prevent that. [ Reply | More ]

OP, I apologize for being paranoid, but does that area have issues with sharks? I live on the outer Cape and it's a real concern here. [ Reply | More ]
