Has anyone done the reading programs offered by Fordham for elementary school kids? I have a 1st grade who is struggling to read and was wondering if this program would be helpful. TIA! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Reading didn’t Truly click for either of my boys until they were in 2nd grade, 7.5yo. And once they got it, I let them read lots of graphic novels. Now they both read well and my 9yo chooses to read as a pass time . [ Reply | More ]

Yes that is a good point. My kids are now avid high level readers, but it was a struggle until 2nd grade. Then sometime mid year everything came together and they started reading reading for pleasure. A friend did do the forham one summer, didn't think it really helped. For a 1st grader, i think most teachers will tel you to keep exposing them to books, let them select, and read with them. reading is hard and that is why it is frustrating ... once that switch flips in their head around 2nd grade, they discover reading is "like watching a movie in my head" and off they go.
