I'm in NYC and have a small yard. I have a black thumb and I'm bad at growing anything. But I want a garden, and I want easy to plant stuff that's good for bees and butterflies. Any advice as to what I should plant? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Hire someone to set it up for you, maybe do yearly maintenance if necessary. [ Reply | More ]

How much sunlight does the garden get a day? That will determine what kind of flowers. Butterflies are attracted to purple plants. You could plant some Wisteria. A few hints: flowers need lots of water. Keep the soil moist, don’t let the soil dry out, but don’t drown the roots. [ Reply | More ]

Figure out the pattern of sunlight, do a quick soil test, and Find local nursery that can help you with plants. [ Reply | More ]

Spirea and weigelia (sp?) are shrubs that are really hardy and attract lots of bees and butterflies. Echinacea is also really great. [ Reply | More ]

Do you have a sunny spot? We have a stand of perennials - coneflowers/echinacea, lupines, and black eyed susans. Every year we supplement that stand with cosmos because I love them. It's the lowest-maintenance part of my yard - just a little weeding - and it's beautiful and butterflies come en masse - dozens of them hang out at any given time. [ Reply | More ]

These are good suggestions for full sun. Also a low salvia like mystic spires or twilight are nice for layering in front of tall plants. [ Reply | More ]
