Has anyone competely ditched/sold all their stuff before moving and started out brand new? We need to move half way across the country and all our stuff is not new. I'm tempted to just start fresh and not have to deal with paying to move old furniture to a nice new place. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Ditch it, save the really good stuff. We did move the ekorne stressless, the custom made beds, desk, scand. dining set, exposed wood sofa (reupholstering & new foam cushions was alone $2000). [ Reply | More ]

Very close to this, 2 new beds, sofa, dressers, bookshelves. It was all worn, broken or just too heavy. But it was a cross-country move and we had to pay part of the cost so better to put that money into nicer stuff. Some of our “new” furniture was vintage. [ Reply | More ]

I moved to London 2 years ago and started over. We threw out or gave away every piece of furniture in our 2br apartment. (All of our stuff was 5+ yrs old and not great quality- Ballard, Ikea, etc). [ Reply | More ]

We did this during our last move. Kids were all upgrading to big kids rooms and the dimensions of our new living room and dining room didn't work with new furniture. Furniture was all very old and worn so I didn't feel badly about donating it all and starting fresh. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, we did this twice when moved from California to the east coast. (We made the same move twice.) First time, yard sale, what we could sell we gave away. Second time, Craigslist. [ Reply | More ]

I think the point is will you save money if there is less stuff to move? If you sell your stuff, do you still need the movers? It can be a massive cost savings. If you still need the movers and there is excess capacity in the truck it isn't as heplful. [ Reply | More ]

I got rid of nearly everything via a large Craigslist sale after I graduated from business school, moving to NYC. I didn't want to pay to move a lot of this stuff and used the proceeds to purchase new items. Did the same thing when moving between apartments in NYC although it was less severe. Either way moving is a great time to clean house. If you don't use it, get rid of it. [ Reply | More ]

Just prepare to spend A LOT on the new furniture. It adds up very quickly especially with all the smaller furniture items that you forget that you'll need. [ Reply | More ]

The answer to this all depends on how much money you have and how much you care about the furniture you have. Some of our furniture has been carefully picked out and I like it. Other pieces - like our couch - I would be happy to get rid of. [ Reply | More ]
