Ben Kallos city council on the UES is leading an effort to defund the police by 1 billion and put it in education. De Blasio is against it. What chance is there that this will happen? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think there's going to be a big push in the Council to reduce the NYPD budget, even if it's just symbolically. There's a big deficit that by law has to be addressed this month. Every agency is being asked to take cuts. [ Reply | More

Doesn't sound like a smart thing to do. Very reactionary. Maybe make them use some money that's already budgeted for them for new types of training (sensitivity, cultural, etc.) and other programs that will hopefully improve the system. Also, changing some of the police policies would be more helpful. [ Reply | More

I'll be pushing for it and contacting my city council rep. I'd love to see them ban tear gas, flash bangs and used military vehicles. The police are out of control and currently accountable to no one. [ Reply | More
