I didn't do the Inca trail itself but went with a local operator that had an alternative route that included biking. Fantastic experience and the only crowded part was the morning we arrived outside the gates of Machu Picchu itself, then there was a mad scramble to the top to get the best viewing tickets, but others went at a leisurely pace and had no issue. I loved it, it was totally worth it. I don't remember the tour operator but there are many of them offering the same thing [ Reply | More ]

It’s not so bad if you do a longer, hard hike—I think they changed the laws about 15 years ago so you have to be part of a guided group with porters, cooks etc which make it more a expensive experience than the cheaper backpacking days in the 1990s, but this keeps trail conditions cleaner and less crowded. And you hike in at sunrise to Machu Picchu and have the place to yourself for a few hours, before the 10 am bus pulls up from Agua Calientes and a cruise ship-sized throng comes marching up. Chicago has murders as well. You have to be a smart traveler anywhere in the world. Also, sounds like you and your friends don't get out much. [ Reply | More ]

The best holiday I ever had was chartering a sailboat with friends and sailing around the Greek Islands for two weeks. So much fun and the experience is so different than going by land. So I recommend sailing [ Reply | More ]

Zambia was unreal. I’ll second Japan and Peru as some of my favorite countries to visit (have lived in both and go back to each every few years), don’t think they need advertising though... not exactly under the radar. [ Reply | More ]

Istanbul! Blue Mosque, Sunken Palace, Bosphorus river, Harems. Topkepi Palace. Before I went to Istanbul 5 years ago I posted on UB asking if anyone has tips on the best places to go. Someone left me a long multi paragraph response full of great places to see including restaurants and all sorts of attractions, it was so nice of her. I did everything on her list and had an incredible time. [ Reply | More ]

Seeing a lot of love for Japan. Have never been. When's the best time of year to go and when can I score the cheapest flight? [ Reply | More ]

Spring is the most expensive for Cherry Blossom season. I’d imagine winter is cheapest but if you’re outdoorsy at all you’d probably prefer not to go in winter (though the skiing is awesome). There is SO MUCH beautiful nature in Japan, I think that aspect of it get overlooked. May is holidays (golden week), June is super rainy, and July/August are nice but can be super humid like NYC in the summer. I’d imagine flights are a bit cheaper in fall too- so I’d say September. Delta has a great direct flight, pay an extra $50 for “ economy preferred” or whatever it’s called. [ Reply | More ]
