I walked in to see my nanny wearing my sweater. Do I fire her? She said she was cold. It was a new sweater, I haven't even wore it yet [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It is not okay to put on your bosses clothing. That is crossing a personal line. I don't even let close friends borrow certain clothing. Let alone something I never wore. I would fire her. [ Reply | More ]

Tags on a chair in your bedroom? That's not ok. Why was she in your bedroom? Aren't there any fleeces or sweatshirts laying around? She takes a sweater? If this is a first time situation I would not fire her, but make it VERY clear that this is not acceptable. Why was she in your room in the first place, she had no need to be in there. She clearly saw no issue with it though. Consider it a misunderstanding. Make a space where she can keep an additional sweater and a change of clothes. Things happen as a nanny. [ Reply | More ]

I totally agree. I might feel too uncomfortable to keep her on if she crossed one of mine personal lines, like yours seems to be touching your stuff. We each have our own triggers that enough is enough. If you feel as though you are going to be angry just beneath the surface at her I would let her go. Mine is not cleaning up at the end of a shift. I left a nanny go over that. But I think it's creepy to wear your bosses clothing. Turn up the heat. And it's mild outside today. [ Reply | More ]

I think dissolving into tears because an employee who works in your home borrowed a warm item of clothing is just as unacceptable. I think you drop the issue. She had no way to know that this was particularly touchy for you, and I don't find your behavior completely rational. I would drop it and move on. Obviously she's on notice now and would be unlikely to do it again unless she's trying to provoke you. [ Reply | More ]

Sure, a hoodie, or a cashmere sweater the nanny brought along for the first day. Or maybe nanny and mom are at a gymboree class, mom has nothing else. The problem with nannies is that they want the perks of being professionals while they enjoy the benefits of acting like teenagers. [ Reply | More ]

It's weird, but I get it. Why don't you find an old sweatshirt or something and lay it out for her and designate it for her to wear when she gets cold? Explain to her that's what it's for and then put in a place where she can easily access it [ Reply | More ]

NP: Good idea. Make her a cubby, and then if someone in the household has old, ripped, or stained clothing, instead of donating it, you can just put it in there. Have DC write "NANNY'S CUBBY" in block letters and affix the sign to it. Nanny will think it is so cute! [ Reply | More ]

I don't think it matters how $ the sweater is. My boss would not like it if I borrowed the blazer sitting on the back of her chair (she probably would not fire me, but I bet I'd pay big time over the long run). If nanny was cold, she could wear her coat or something. It is rude and disrespectful of boundaries (especially to go in your room and take it). [ Reply | More ]

OP, are you seriously so fucked up that you can't have a reasonable conversation with your nanny, in which you communicate to her how you feel and what your expectations are around your clothing/personal items? The solutions you've come up with (firing her, crying hysterically, hiding out in your room) are so immature and unhealthy... and they won't even improve your situation. Don't punish your nanny for YOUR issues; just talk to her for chrissake. [ Reply | More ]

i think what i'd want to know is how your nanny gets along with your child/ren. haven't seen it mentioned, but maybe i missed it. if she's good with them and it's a close relationship, i'd think twice before firing her on the spot. we always want to lump everything together when we make decisions like this, but really, it should be done on a case by case basis. what was she thinking when it happened? what was her reasoning? what's she like as a person overall? and again, what is her relationship with your kids? to me, that would be the key thing.
