Hey 1st time helicopter moms: do not glare at me at the playground when I sit back to see if our children can work out a sharing/taking turns situation on their own without violence or adult intervention. Your child will have no negotiation skills when he gets to school and will have no idea how to talk things through with his peers. So YOUR child will be the one to hit MY child out of frustration when you are not around to speak for him. So yeah, don't glare at me, dummy. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

are you saying you let two 1yos fight it out on their own? I agree with you when the kids are 3 or maybe 4 and older. Younger than that there is no way they can actually figure those things out on their own. [ Reply | More ]

She didn't say fight it out. And yes, if a year old child grabs a sand toy from mine, I sit back and see what my child will do. If they "turn the other cheek" hurray. No worries, if they grab it back and the other child gives, no problem. If they start fighting, I step in. [ Reply | More ]

what? you mean you don't rush to fix whatever perceived injustice you feel your child is faced with, any time of the day? I mean, that other child TOOK THE SAND TOY that your child has EVERY RIGHT TO!!! lol [ Reply | More ]

I bet you're one of those moms who lets their kid takes my kid's toy out of his hands, then glares at me when I walk up to your kid and ask for it back. [ Reply | More ]

well, that's when the negotiation comes in. if johnny takes your dc's pail, then your dc needs to figure out a nonviolent way to stick up for himself. [ Reply | More ]

but PS: this does not count if dc was playing with the pail 5 minutes ago but then gets upset when Johnny takes the opportunity to pick up the toy himself to play. [ Reply | More ]

whatever. i think it's fine after a certain age, but my daughter who is 23 mos doesn't have the capacity to negotiate at that age. [ Reply | More ]
