Friend called to tell me her child failed school. There isnt an option for summer school. How do you react to this? I feel bad for the child, but also feel like the parent should do more. She is a SAHM. He is in elementary. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Kids do fail, you are not given grades just to pass. [ Reply | More ]

well no matter if he repeats the grade, an 8+ week of summer vacation w/o academics will not be good for this child. She needs to find a program or seriously homeschool this summer. [ Reply | More ]

So the kid has to do the grade over? That would be hard for him socially. [ Reply | More ]

ditto. if I had a kid on the cusp of this, I would be so involved to prevent it. There has to be some kind of warning, and advice from the teacher on what to be doing at home to bring up grades, etc. [ Reply | More ]

exactly . it takes a whole year of not caring to fail the whole grade , so she was not invloved for 10 months of the school year?? [ Reply | More ]

I'd take him to a psychologist first and figure out what is going on... Maybe being left back is a good thing. [ Reply | More ]

I think it is a good thing to hold them back. They will only struggle more in the future. [ Reply | More ]

depends on why. If the kid has an ED/LD or some other issue which can be addressed, then doing nothing would be cruel. [ Reply | More ]

She should try to find out if there is an underlying problem - repeating a year is not a solution if the child has some sort of learning issue. [ Reply | More ]
