moved to hoboken almost 2 yrs ago - very disappointed that it's such a white town with little diversity; lots of families, but oh-so-waspy... very few black and latino families, some asians around, but not at all diverse... feel like don't fit in here, but can't afford to live in the city and love how close it is to manhattan (both dh and i work there)... anyone else feel the same way? It really depends on where you are in Hoboken. We live right by the high school and see a spectrum of diversity. But I agree, it's not as diverse as a lot of other areas. [ Reply | More ]

yeah- we live further back. The demographic definitely varies throughout the town. Our church is nothing but diversity for instance. I'm asian, Dh is white, and we see a lot of other multicultural families at the places we frequent. [ Reply | More ]

a bit late on this, but we go to restaurants uptown for the most part, church at St. Ann's, Columbus Park, library, Shoprite, etc. no play groups or anything yet. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think of Hoboken as WASPY, but you might like Brooklyn. [ Reply | More ]

maybe not waspy - but very monotonous; all the moms there seem to all behave the same way... i'm thinking brooklyn would be more interesting too - but i've never been there! it's only a 30m drive away but have never hung out there... which neighborhoods should i check out first? [ Reply | More ]

thank you! that's what i've been trying to say... i went through schooling with an incredibly diverse crowd, as well as training for my job... now that we've moved to where we plan to live at for the first 5 yrs of db's life, i feel a huge disconnect w/my town... just feel sad [ Reply | More ]

We had considered a Hoboken move until we visited. My dh and ds were the only non-whites. We felt totally strange. Brooklyn is waaaaay better if you can not afford to live in the city. Downtown Brooklyn, Fort Greene, Clinton, Carroll Gardens and even part of Brooklyn Heights is better. You might try the cheap middle class projects (Covent Garden on Jay Street/Adams street) for cheap family size housing in BH. [ Reply | More ]

i think i'll make dh go visit those areas w/me... we already bought our place in hoboken though (dh grew up in jersey city and went to stevens (in hoboken) - he clearly does not feel the same way as me; he's not caucasian) so i'm not sure if a move is even practical... [ Reply | More ]

We loved Brooklyn Heights...You can get a 2-bedroom, 2-bath for under 600000 in Concord Village. [ Reply | More ]

where in jc do you live? dh's parents live near journal square.. it's a bit of a hot mess over there... we love how we can walk around hoboken, how many parks there are, the beautiful waterfront, the stores; but then we sit down at a restaurant or talk to people, and i immed feel out of place. i live downtown in Van Vorst Park area. very different from Journal Square (tho' my dd goes to preschool up there). You should come over on the PATH one day to Grove St. and walk around here and Paulus Hook, Harsimus and Hamilton Park nabes. Very diverse, but like Hoboken, also very transient. People move a lot.
