I feel for you. We had the option to move out a few years ago and decided against it. I hope it goes well for you, but I couldn't do it! [ Reply | More ]

Give me a break. It's not sure death to live in the suburbs, especially the suburbs of NYC, where, if you really want to, you can get there easily. You're only going to hate it in the 'burbs if you have a bad attitude. [ Reply | More ]

np: big life change is not hell on earth; ITA it is about your attitude. I do much of the same things here in the burbs as I did in NYC, and I find everything to be easier and more enjoyable. [ Reply | More ]

It's a big change but you just have to prioritize if, like us, you can't afford to stay in the city. If we'd stayed we'd have to have a smaller family and deal with the school battle. We moved, and we have 3 kids, a dog, and great schools that I don't have to fight to get into. I can grocery shop with ease (no crammed aisles and lugging heavy groceries home) and my kids, who have very different ways of learning (one has learning disabilities) each get what they need without a hassle. And we visit NYC at least twice a month, maintained our museum memberships, go to the parks, and get to enjoy the fun aspects of the city. We miss it most in the winter, when options here are fewer. ITA! It's diff't from the City, but not by any stretch inferior. There are so many things to do, easy to meet other moms and a real sense of community. I find the moms here to be so nice and helpful and not at all like the UB moms. I loved the City, but I don't miss it. What I would miss about the City were my single/early married years, but I don't miss the kids in the City at all. [ Reply | More ]

What town are you targeting? Could you find a NJ town with a real "city/downtown" feel? [ Reply | More ]

I live on the UES, but think this is most people. My friend in a nice suburb in Westchester was making fun of her new neighbor who was freaking out "What will I do here, we're from the CITY." My friend grew up here and lived here her whole life before going to the suburbs, and she said 99.9% of the town lived in the city too. There are pros to the suburbs when you have kids. ^^^ and BTW, you're moving at a great time of year- we moved in the fall and it's only been recently that I've really enjoyed the "outdoor living" aspect of the move- coming home from work and sitting out on the patio with a drink, throwing dinner on the grill while DD plays in the yard is AWESOME. it's the best part, imo. we moved to the burbs (not nyc) 8 yrs ago and i still have days when i love it and days when i hate it. it's about weighing your options and when you have your down days remindiing yourself WHY you did it. we chose to move here b/c we got a bigger house for less money and the public schools are great. we'd be shelling out $45,000+ for private schools for our 3 kids each yr if we'd stayed in the city. when i get annoyed with my neighbors, i pack of the kids, drive downtown and we all eat somewhere that i wouldn't be able to afford if we'd stayed urban. How much do you love your car?!?! We spent 3-5 hours a day in the car before we moved to NYC...Just basic grocery, mall, school, activities... I love being able to walk everywhere. That is what would kill me. [ Reply | More ]

Not at one stretch, but over the course of a day--Yes. 15-25 minutes at a time: (1) School drop off; (2) Target; (3) Home; (4) School pick up; (5) Home; (6) Playgroup; (7) Home; (8) Grocery (several stops often caught in Rush hour)... Yes, I could have put more errands together, BUT naps, lunch, and downtime for kids happened inbetween. [ Reply | More ]

do you like clean air and playgrounds where you don't have to get in a brawl for a swing? how about having more than one closet or being able to sleep well because it is quiet? how about not having to pack all your kids in one BR or alcove? here's a crazy thought - YOU MIGHT LOVE IT! It is not 1970 anymore - the suburbs are different now. And the best part about living in the burbs is not dealing with all those pretentious, wealth-obsessed and narrow-minded people who think Manhattan is the only place to live. [ Reply | More ]

I was raised in Wash. Hts., NYC & lived there unitl I moved to NJ about 2 years ago when I got married. If it was entirely up to me I would have stayed in Manhattan, however, I would never have the space in NYC that I do now. It's not easy, I miss it alot. It's what you're willing to give up. yes! it took time and adjustment but when you can walk outside barefoot, let your kids go out and in a million times a day, have one nap and one play outside...it makes it worth it. there's a great site that pokes fun at the 'burbs (you got to laugh at it to survive) you might want to look at, www.burbia.com. I you are moving to a surburb like Larchmont or Mamaroneck you shouldn't regret you can walk to most places in both towns depending on where yoy live of course and a lot of the residents are from the city (UWS types mostly), there is also a short commute 35 minutes or less from both places to the city.
