Need some help, MIL is in ICU, and we're not sure if she will come out of it. How do you talk to a 5 year old about ICU, and death of a grand parent? Any advice? BTDT? Thanks! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Great book "The Fall of Freddie the Leaf"... my ds's teacher of three years passed away during the school year of a long illness when he was 5... he still won't talk about her he loved her so, but books help... and honesty and everything... he asked lots of questions about where will her body go, what will happen to her bod, will i ever see her again, and the psychologist said to answer simply without too much detail, but honestly... OP: Thanks for the advice. He hasn't been to visit her at the hospital yet. Not too worried about that, he was in the hospital last year and understands the reason for IVs and equipment. But I am really worried about the questions he may ask about what happens if she were to pass. I will really take a look at that book. [ Reply | More ]

it's very good... about a leaf on a branch that enjoys the seasons and the wond and then notices as it gets colder that many of the leaves fall and where do they go until one day he falls too... sounds maybe too "advanced" in concept, but it is presented in a natural "life cycle" way yet still poetic. Also look at "the Three Good Things About Barney"... [ Reply | More ]

Also "Lifetimes" -- again about the lifetime of everything, from an ant to a person. The only oddity is that it describes a person's lifetime as being 60-70 years. But it's a good basic, even before being exposed to an actual death/possible death. [ Reply | More ]

you might be really surprised about what your 5yo knows (or thinks he knows) about death. they hear lots of things from friends about relatives or pets who died. be prepared to listen to your child. [ Reply | More ]
