DD broke her arm at daycare last week. She was holding a rope they use to bring the kids to and from the playground and another kid pulled the rope, breaking her arm. Teacher waited 4.5 hrs. to call me, even though she cried a lot and arm hanging limp. I was all set to find new situation--would be difficult, but I couldn't see leaving her there another day. But I spoke to director, and she said all the right things and implemented major changes to safety protocol. It kinda took the wind out of my sales and now I'm not sure whether to pull her anyway. WWYD? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Director had a meeting with all staff and told them all that parent must be called immediately. She apologized and sais teacher was wrong to wait. [ Reply | More ]

what i would say is "i don't care what safety protocols you put in place after this incident! the problem is, no one called me when my child's arm was broken after almost 5 hours!!!!!" [ Reply | More ]

I would talk to my ped. who would have a lot more experience with broken arms. Maybe your ped will tell you lots of parents wait a long time, don't realize the arm is broken. OTOH, maybe your ped will tell you that only a moron wouldn't have realized that immediate medical care was required. [ Reply | More ]

ita. A friend of mine is a K teacher and had a student break her arm on the playground, and she kept her in the class all afternoon because the child didn't complain that it hurt! She needed surgery too- it was awful, and my teacher friend was a wreck about it. But she really didn't know that it was serious. [ Reply | More ]

my mom waited 2 days before taking me when i broke my arm as a kid. i wasn't freaking out, i could move it in all directions, and she didn't think it was anything more than hurt. after two days of soaking in epsom salts, she took me and they put a cast on it. [ Reply | More ]

I can't imagine that the teacher knew it was broken or how bad it was hurting your child. [ Reply | More ]

my mother is a piano teacher and had a student in her class who had two broken arms for about 5 days until my mother noticed. i broke my foot, and my mother (the same woman, obviously) waited about 5 hours to bring me to the hospital. it is fine. did your daughter cry the full 5 hours? i doubt it. i can understand you would feel this way, but i don;t think the teacher was necessarily in the wrong and that you have to pull your kid because of it. In the teacher's defense, it seems so unlikely that being pulled while holding a rope could break an arm. My friend waited days before realizing her dd's arm was broken from a fall off a bike. [ Reply | More ]
