Anyone else mulling the private vs. citywide decision? How are you leaning should your dc get citywide placement? I change my mind daily. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

if i could comfortably afford private i wouldn't think twice about it. we plan to send dc to private hs no matter what public we're in. [ Reply | More ]

op: comfortably is the operative word here. We can only afford it with some discomfort. [ Reply | More ]

We just went through this, and decided to go with citywide. (99) With a $700k HHI. FWIW. [ Reply | More ]

so money was not the issue for you. Are you happy with the choice? What type of private did you pass up? [ Reply | More ]

Solid 2nd tier co-ed. And, frankly, money was the issue. We have a younger ds too, so looking at, all-in, $100k, for both. If the cachet of private school was important whatsoever to us we would have gone the other way. But it isn't. [ Reply | More ]

Only 2nd tier coed is ECFS and Riverdale. One of these? [ Reply | More ]

oh yea. See this is one example of why we went public. (OR here) No, *another 2nd tier*. Really! [ Reply | More ]

OMG, I just can't imagine having HHI of 700k & money being the issue for going public. WTF do you people spend your $ on???? My family of 4 get by on HHI of 130k. It's hard, but we actually considered scraping by & giving up our few tiny indulgences to see if we could send our 2nd to private. Sorry to be so incredulous, but really, I can't imagine making that much money & not wanting to spend it on your children's education. [ Reply | More ]

np - Maybe because that poster thinks that their public school choice is just fine. She did say she doesn't need the cachet of private school. [ Reply | More ]

OR: I think its irresponsible for *most* people, in *most* circumstances, for a variety of reasons, to consider spending $30k minimum on kindergarten. I'm a product of public schools (and ivy college). Feel like I've seen both sides of the fence, clearly, and this is our choice. As for "WTF do we spend $$ on"? College savings, retirement, charitable donations, among the usual. [ Reply | More ]

So what's the threshold? Is it okay for you to spend almost half ($60k of $130k) on education, but not, say 2/3rd? If there was a $100k/yr K option floating around out there, would you look down on millionaires for not going that route? [ Reply | More ]

You I can't stand. If we made 700k I'd pay for private without blinking. I really can't stand public. Only looking at it because I don't want to loose sleep over not being able to keep up with our bills and save [ Reply | More ]

Cant stand me!? maybe if we lived in a horrible zone I'd share your antipathy about public. Or if dc needed some sort of special attention. But none of that's true. you should love me, because we're spending the money on actual problems in the world! [ Reply | More ]

Well - perhaps just jealous. If I lived near a good school I might be more open to public. But even with 300k HHI we can't afford to move to a better zone without significantly downsizing or pay for private for 2 dcs. [ Reply | More ]

we opted out of solid lower tier school for good selective public last year, as did many others. would only do for anderson LL or ps9 personally. [ Reply | More ]

would not travel so far for a citywide. feel local options are as good or better academically, and that the commute would not be worth it. there are many years in front of us, and I have no idea where we will want to be in 13 years of education. thus, I am not so invested in having it all figured out at the K level. seems reasonable to play it as we go [ Reply | More ]

gotcha. NEST is closest for us, so that would be our top pick. [ Reply | More ]

I am mulling it for the future--e.g., I have a child that was too young for privates this year and I was attending to apply for next year, but when OLSAT score came in high I decided to see what happened with citywides this year. It is obviously an easier switch to public for me than for some others because I won't need to forgo any type of deposit [ Reply | More ]

We will take Anderson over lower tier private, but probably won't get it with a 98. I am holding off ordering uniforms though until placements are mailed, just in case. The only reason is $$. Otherwise, prefer private for lots of reasons. [ Reply | More ]

use your connections. you don't have any connections, hire a consultant. they get flamed on here, but if it was not for my consultant, we would not have a placement. got off a waitlist in March. [ Reply | More ]
