What should I expect to pay for live-in nanny in NYC for twins (8 months)...working 24-7...with one weekend off a month. Going rate? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

24/7? [ Reply | More ]

Obviously no one works 24/7--8 mos spend a lot of time sleeping, etc. I think what OP means is that the person is expected to be on call 24/7, which is quite different. Would you say a sahm works 24/7? In some senses yes, but not exactly, if you know what I mean. [ Reply | More ]

So when you are at work you only get paid while you are actually working? No. You get paid for being at work. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, these people get paid A LOT (see fees for baby nurses below), but obviously they have a lot of down time in which they can get other stuff done. My baby nurse (also 24/7) used to go out all the time on errands, etc. when we were around and with the kids. Why is this so hard to understand? [ Reply | More ]

It works out to $11.90 an hour. It may sound like a lot in total but it's not. [ Reply | More ]

And room and board and cell phone and whatnot, don't forget--they are live-ins. Not to mention that if someone paid me $12/hour to sleep, I'd be pretty psyched. [ Reply | More ]

How is that person going to run personal errands for herself? She does have to buy clothes once in a while, no? Is she supposed to bring the kids with her? Or a pager that goes off if mom needs her back to home? [ Reply | More ]

how on earth could they collect or spend the paycheck if they work 24/7 for 28 out of 30 days of a month? [ Reply | More ]

Maybe they're saving every last cent so they can quit in a few years and do something else. I don't know--I'm not them. But somewhere, someone, would gladly take a hefty paycheck for a few years. [ Reply | More ]

Sounds basically like a baby nurse, which generally costs in the neighborhood of $2K per week for twins. [ Reply | More ]

$2k/week? That comes out to more than $100k/yr. That for just doing a mom's job. [ Reply | More ]

If you cannot deal with a baby you really shouldn't have gotten one in the first place. Oh, maybe I should add that to the sanctimommy thread. [ Reply | More ]

I used to make more than that when I worked. Taking care of babies is tough work. Why should people who devote themselves to it pretty much round the clock make any less than this? FWIW, baby nurses usually take plenty of time off between jobs. [ Reply | More ]

Anyone going for a 24/7 job with twins would have to be totally desperate for the cash to even consider this. [ Reply | More ]

np: this post cracks me up because women are applying their own work standards on what many immigrant women might be totally willing to do. americans, in general, are lazy. i know many a russian nanny that works these kinds of hours. [ Reply | More ]

np. They don't WANT to work these hours it's because they NEED to. I knew someone wanting to bring a nanny over from India legally because they "would hardly have to pay her anything and she wouldn't have friends to go and visit anyway so the long hours wouldn't be a problem". [ Reply | More ]

they "want" to work here because they can make a lot more money here than at home. is this person you know a criminal for giving an opportunity to someone who is probably chomping at the bit to take it? also, since when is basically being a mother without help the equivalent to working in a sweat shop? You can't schedule someone to this in NY. If you try this, be careful how you document it and talk to an employment awyer. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know that there is a going rate for this b/c I don't know anyone who has this arrangement (and everyone I know has household help). but I can tell you that $800/wk is standard for a live-in for twins 5 days a week. You are basically looking for 7 days/wk, so I would say $1100/wk. [ Reply | More ]

Is the live-in on call 24 hours for those 5 days? I never understand what the point is of having someone live in your house if they aren't going to be on-call the whole time they're there. Why give up a bedroom to someone who only works, say 9-7 anyway? [ Reply | More ]

If you don't work you really shouldn't be asking this question. If you and your spouse both work, maybe one of you should quit and stay home and raise your children. Do you pay someone to walk your dog, too? [ Reply | More ]
