very small class size can also be a indicator of potential problems, some of the worst performing schools in the city have small class sizes. [ Reply | More ]

there's been a lot of news coverage about this recently. I think the best zoned schools in districts 2 and 3 are all over 100% capacity (some as much as 130-150% capacity) so yes, they are definitely over the 25-seat limit. check insideschools.org, too. [ Reply | More ]

In D3 it's a lottery that you needed to register for a while back. [ Reply | More ]

I think when you see the numbers for capacity - it refers to how many students the building was designed for, not to how many are in each classroom. [ Reply | More ]

we're in Riverdale. School is overcrowded but is capped at 25 kids per K class... I think they bus out after that... we had to register early, wait on line... people were freaked. but I think everyone is in. [ Reply | More ]

sorry to hijack, but this whole situation is a bit scary. there are way too many kids in the city now...more people having more kids, more families staying in the city...lots of new condo buildings with family-sized apts going up in the good districts...and the publics aren't prepared, and there aren't enough private seats either. What a mess. [ Reply | More ]

I think with the slower economy and high real estate prices, more people are moving further away from Manhattan and even out of NYC altogether. There are just too many unknowns regarding school as it stands. [ Reply | More ]

In this year's K class, there are 4 classes (3 have 20 kids and 1 has 16 kids). No one yet knows what the numbers will be for the incoming 2008 class. I already know of 1 family that is cheating to get their kid enrolled in our zoned school. Part of me wants to anonymously report them, but I won't. [ Reply | More ]

No, PS3. The DOE managed to take a great choice school that served a diverse (racially and socioeconomically) population and did it well and destroy it. [ Reply | More ]

The thing is that it is in a very crowded zone. Bumping up the number of kids per class is the cheapest and easiest way out of this problem. [ Reply | More ]

I think its shortsighted. If they kicked out all of the people in 41 with fake addresses, the problem would be much better. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.04.08, 10:03 AM Flag

41 will be scrutinizing addresses this year. the problem won't go away even so simply because there are so many dcs. and anyway, if it's ok for people at 3 to be outside of the zone, you can't really get on your high horse about people using fake addresses at 41. [ Reply | More ]

It's not ok for people to be in 3 outside of the zone. Why do you think it is? The DOE changed all of that when they elimated variances. And what is with YOUR attitude? [ Reply | More ]

it's a shame, but unfortunately the neighborhood has grown to the point where there needs to be two zoned schools, not one zoned and one choice school that takes a sizable number of dcs from outside the zone. the doe really had no choice in this case. [ Reply | More ]

That is interesting. I think GV is one of the FEW neighborhoods without tons of high rises being built. I guess more people are just staying in the village and having more children. [ Reply | More ]

i think that's true. plus, while you don't think of the heart of gv as having high rises, there are new ones in the zone, on union square for instance, or morton square or in the meatpacking district. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe they should just redraw the zone lines. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.04.08, 10:10 AM Flag

i think that's a given, but it's very controversial. people who buy in a zone thinking they are going to send dc to a certain school only to find they aren't. the good news is there will be two new schools with good facilities. part of the issue people have with 3 (besides the philosophy) is how run-down it is. [ Reply | More ]

I just read the sun article and I think that if you give people two years notice - then you should be able to redraw the zones. I think that is fair. Anyone else? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.04.08, 10:19 AM Flag

eh. it affects property values as well. when you can't sell your apt. as being in, say, the 234 zone, it makes a difference. until the other school gets the same reputation. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.04.08, 10:20 AM Flag

life is tough. There are no easy answers. I think the population in NYC has changed and redrawing the lines with the neww data makes perfect sense to me. If your apt was in 234 and isn't anymore, that is a shame. But - it is not the end of the world. You sell it, sublet it, rent or buy elsewhere, go to a g&t, go to an unzoned school 150 or 212, or go private. That is A LOT of choice. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.04.08, 10:23 AM Flag
»
first off, if you live in a co-op, it's very difficult to sublet it. 150 has only 25 slots per grade, so that's no guarantee, and neither is 212. and why should you have to go private if you bought specifically for a good public? some people pour all their money into an apt in a good zone and don't then have the money for private. of course not. but to watch the value of your property nosedive when the person across the street's is fine simply because of some arbitrarily drawn zoning line is not easy. i have sympathy for these people and i'm not even one of them. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.04.08, 10:29 AM Flag

The line was just as arbitrary when it included your side of the street. That is the part you are missing. When did they draw the zones? How many more buildings have been build within that "square" of space? It only makes sense to redraw. [ Reply | More ]

wait a minutes. Since when are property prices guaranteed? Shit happens. The DOE needs to redraw the zone boundaries, Tough luck for the ones who will suffer, but that is life. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.04.08, 10:29 AM Flag

nothing is guaranteed, but people buy in certain neighborhoods for certain schools and have a reasonable expectation that their property value won't decrease because of zoning. [ Reply | More ]

I am very sure the city has the right to do that. It is going to be unpopular among a minority of folks, so what? Short of building more and more schools why not trying to balance the load among schools first? [ Reply | More ]

Since when? What makes you think that? Did they have a clause in your mortgage? This makes no sense. It is unreasonable no matter how hard you argue that it is. You assumed too much. [ Reply | More ]

There is one poster obsessed with property value and their case is simply not true. Besides, this is not a new idea. Cities redraw lines and have for decades. You deal. No one gets a guarantee. There is a problem and there are no easy solutions. You come up with what works best. [ Reply | More ]
