every state has a number of delegates based on population. they vote the way their state voted. simple. we are not a direct demo where every vote "counts". every vote counts in that they are translated into a delegate vote. or did you mean super delegates ? [ Reply | More ]

op: thanks, pls elaborate on super delegates. Also, if dels vote the way the voters voted how can one win popular vote but not delegate vote? Again, TIA [ Reply | More ]

super delegates are like tie-breakers or the chaperone at the dance. they make decisions if everything looks so screwed up that "big brother" has to settle things... they rarely mean anything, but this time they have become visible [ Reply | More ]

(NP: just to be clear. Hillary only won the popular vote if you count Florida and Michigan and don't count caucus states. This would be like saying Hillary would be the winner if she ran uncontested... Duh! Hell in Michigan she was the only real candidate on the ballot and only got 55% of the Democratic vote. Like 40% of the voters in Michigan went and voted for no one instead of voting for her.) [ Reply | More ]

and they are divided proportionally, based on the popular votes, unlike in the general election where it is winner take all for the delegates. [ Reply | More ]

This is not true for Republican primaries and only partially true for Democrats. (Democratic delegates are not just proportional to vote (or population within the state. As was said below, voting history means something, too.) [ Reply | More ]

or: thanks for clarifying. it's all very convoluted. [ Reply | More ]

np: 1. depending on the state the directly elected delegates are beholden to vote for their nominee for some number of votes. (Usually two.) After that they are free to exercise their own judgment. (This also has nothing to do with super delegates.) 2. direct delegates are not all apportioned in the Democratic party by population. A lot of them are based on the historic likelihood a district voted Democratic in prior elections. (This is why Obama was tied or really close in delegates in some of the states Hillary won.) op: this somehow seems dangerously close to the people not electing their choice by one person one vote. It seems like a broken way of doing this. I support either dem candidate, BTW [ Reply | More ]

we havenever had one person one vote... it is what we are told because it is an easy way to explain democracy to children... it is far more complex than that. [ Reply | More ]

op: This I know, just seems antiquated and not useful anymore to have this whole delegate/super delegate/caucus thing. [ Reply | More ]
