We own our own home, a brownstone in Brooklyn, and have some savings but no real retirement savings. Starting to freakout. We are 40 and have no nest egg other than our house. We are busy saving for college for our 2 kids. Should we be saving more for retirement than college, or should we not worry since we have a very valuable house? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

so glad we own our home outright, maxed out college savings for both dc and have no debt whatsoever. Not even 40 yet! You can get there, too. [ Reply | More ]

no, not everyone can get there. actually around 80% of this country can't so stop assuming everyone is lucky enough to be as rich as you. [ Reply | More ]

I actually just read that instead of putting money into dc's college fund, parents should be saving for retirement because with student loans, work etc, dc's could practically pay for college on their own. [ Reply | More ]

besides, you get penalized for saving for college. i had $3k in savings when i went to college and they just subtracted that from my financial aid package. the next year i got $3k more when it was spent. what was the point of even saving anything? [ Reply | More ]
