Betsey Gotbaum & a number of councilpersons are holding a press conference tomorrow to get the DOE to deal with the public PreK mess (wrongfully rejected kids) at the Tweed building on chamber, behind City Hall, at 12:45. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I really wish that the new governor would push Bloomberg & Klein around on this. Where is our leadership??? [ Reply | More ]

^^^ To clarify, I don't mean on the preK issue specifically, but on the myriad failures of the DOE and the way the city is pitting families against each other in this budget battle. It is thoroughly disgusting. [ Reply | More ]

this is effing ridiculous. it's pre-k. NO ONE IS ENTITLED TO PRE-K!!!!!!!!! you poor, aggrieved umc mommies who are willing to fight to the death over city-issued finger paint, go knock yourselves out. you repulse me. [ Reply | More ]

why does it repulse you? They had a list of admissions criteria/priorities & they didn't follow it. [ Reply | More ]

it just makes me laugh that the liberals never put their money where their mouth is. oh, more money for public aid! for workfare! for job training for those in poverty! but you take my free pre-k spot from me when i can afford to pay for a babysitter and i will f&cking rip your face off. screw anyone who actually needs free childcare! ahem, i was referring to the pinko a$$hole who thinks the UMC people can just go pay for preschool. it is this attitude that ruins public school for many [ Reply | More ]

umc people can pay for preschool. or they can skip preschool and sahm or hire a nanny. what's so hard to understand here? [ Reply | More ]

why should they? why should they not have access to public education just because they can afford to do otherwise. build more headstart peograms, and let all members of the public have access to public education [ Reply | More ]

Then why stop with pre-K? Lots of publics are overcrowded now. I guess all UMC families should send dc to private school. Or if they can't get into a private school, they can home school or hire a tutor. That ought to be great for the public school system. [ Reply | More ]

huge difference. pre-k is not necessary, so there isn't a spot for everyone who wants one. you're guaranteed a seat in a public k. [ Reply | More ]

No, you're not. K is not required in NYC. [ Reply | More ]

you're hairsplitting. boe has always given themselves an out, but name one dc who has been denied a seat in k. (i'm not saying their zoned k, i'm saying any k.) it's very different from pre-k. [ Reply | More ]

You're the one who started with the hairsplitting, actually. It's not a huge difference. K isn't mandatory, and as long as dc is being educated by SOMEONE, like parents or a tutor, they're not obligated to attend a school. Your argument that the UMC should opt out of public pre-K and pay their own way applies just as well for K and beyond. [ Reply | More ]
