We live in Brooklyn. Would you consider sending your 5 yo to a school in Manhattan knowing you would have to drive them to school everyday over the bridge? Can't do the subway due to having a second child and no accessible subways within walking distance for the stroller. I'm actually too small to carry the stroller up and down stairs. And before you flame, please don't be rude because I have a physical limitation. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My understanding is that DOE will not bus kids across district lines. Of course privates may handle things differently. [ Reply | More ]

big ole waste of our tax dollars. use the money to fix the school. why should one person's kid get bused out, while all the others remain. [ Reply | More ]

I think I'd consider it for the right school in Manhattan. Driving would be a pain, but if you can't do the subway, then it's the only way. Nest? [ Reply | More ]

we chose not to apply to manhattan schools more because - if something happens again - we didn't want to be on the other side of the river from our dd. i have friends who take their preschooler to manhattan via subway and it is quite an ordeal even with the subway. that said, the competition for the brooklyn schools is so intense, there's just no easy answer. I would consider it if you couldn't get your child into a decent school in Brooklyn. But if the Manhattan school is just a little better, and you have a decent bkln school, stay local. [ Reply | More ]

When my DD was 3-4 , we had to drive in everyday because my mom lives in the city. She also went to pre-school in the area. The drive was not bad becasue we would hop on the HOV lane , thru the tunnel and were at our destination within 20 minutes. But it was expensive - tolls, gas, Parking. MOst days I would dress her while she continued sleeping and she would keep sleeping in the car. She got used to it. For us it was not about a great school but about a caregiver we could trust. If we get our first choice for G&T , we will be doing it again next year. Now there is two , so I know there will be challenges. [ Reply | More ]

move your ass to manhattan. you sound like a very high maintenance woman. for god's sake, give up the big apt in brooklyn and learn to live like a manhattanite in order to save the sanity of your kids, if not yourself. [ Reply | More ]

I wonder if there is a way for you to talk with other families who have made the decision and lived through a year of commuting. Perhaps if you get a spot in the school, you could contact them and get a number or e-mail address? [ Reply | More ]

i'm confused. you have a physical limitation but you are considering driving two dcs (one an infant) into manhattan every day during rush hour? isn't this a no-brainer? [ Reply | More ]

Honestly, it can be a PITA! We live on the UES and my DS is in K at Fieldston (in Riverdale). He takes the bus -- but we are also at the school lots (for special programs, parent meetings, etc.). I think that it's the right school for him, but I also sometimes wonder about our choice! [ Reply | More ]

I hope this isn't too personal, but how long is your commute? How much longer would make it undoable? Not OP, but I'm considering a lengthy commute as well. TIA [ Reply | More ]

That commute in general, but in particular with a baby as well, will be so stressful for the family. I suppose it might be worth it for a very special school that you think will fit your DC to a T, but if you can find as-good or even nearly-as-good options closer to you, that would be a better deal. No, I wouldn't, unless the other option was a really bad school. It's not only too much for you, I think it's stressful for the kid, and it's going to make playdates hard too. Sometimes what's best for the child is having a mother who isn't driving herself crazy trying to do what's best for him. [ Reply | More ]
