how do you all deal with the bullshit that is living in NYC? don't tell me it's "worth it" because i'm reading about people completely stressed about getting their kid into preschool. WTF? no wonder why new yorkers are so rude and angry all the time. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

there is bs everywhere. and sometimes the good outweighs the bs. and plenty of people don't buy into the stress of schools [ Reply | More ]

fair enough but it sounds like people don't even have options to send their child somewhere. that's the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. [ Reply | More ]

The school thing is definitely the worst thing about living in NYC but there are so many positives. My kids have spent 6 years in a school we love. I walk to work and my kids walk to school. We know many of the store owners in the neighborhood and chat with them. We always run into people we know in the playground. I like the diversity. I love not having to drive. I love going to museums rather than malls on rainy Saturdays. I love that people use public space. But the school thing is really hard and stressful. But suburbs have their own stresses too. Generalize much? Most people don't buy into the preschool hype, but do buy into the other choices that come with living in NYC - like having things like AMNH as a "rainy day activity" instead of a once a year special event. And NYC residents are generally not rude and angry, those are just the tourists who think they have to act that way to fit in (and end up making asses of themselves in the process). [ Reply | More ]

np: i've totally seen this. it's true. saw a woman from seattle the other night totally freaking out at a taxi driver because he was honking at the car in front of him that wouldn't move. the woman wasn't even a passenger...she was on the street and started gesturing at the cab driver, like she probably imagined NYers do in movies. We've gotten both kids into the schools we want each time so far. I'm not going to say it's a cakewalk, but it's not nearly as bad as the freak-outs here make it sound. You just have to know what you're doing, be willing to do a little work, and not buy into the idea that there are onyl one or two acceptable schools in all of NYC. [ Reply | More ]

this is silly. don't stress about getting your child into preschool. its easy. Live your life, the way you want. If 10 of your 11 friends are whacking out over preschool - hang out with the one that isn't. [ Reply | More ]

I was born here, don't drive and am very smart, so for me it's worth it. Don't like car culture and slow pace of most places. However, the city has been practically wrecked by its own popularity lately so yes, please leave so the streets can get walkable again and rents can come down. [ Reply | More ]

It's not worth it unless you're really wealthy. I'm desperate to get out but we're stuck for now because of jobs. [ Reply | More ]

I think burbs are more stressful in a way. Especially the constant driving, traffic, and depending on a car. That would drive me nuts [ Reply | More ]

Re friendliness, it really depends where you live. Our (Manhattan) family neighborhood is very friendly. I would not like to live in some parts of downtown, e.g. I don't think Chelsea or the LES are equally friendly (just examples). And with a relatively high HHI there's less stress and anxiety. On less $$s, I would move elsewhere. My personal reason for living here is that I'm working FT. It would be much harder to commute to Manhattan each day. [ Reply | More ]
