I have a theory that people who don't get a NEST placement the first go round may get a call over the summer based on people refusing their spots (probably the same for TAG if it comes to that) [ Reply | More ]

As was said below by the seven years poster -- I am a new poster ("np:") -- I would argue that although the school is seven years old, to count the first five years -- the years under Celenia Chévere -- as part of the current administration's learning curve is silly. By every one's account, the school changed dramatically two years ago. The current principal -- I just looked this up -- started two years ago this June and became permanent a year and a half ago. There was a lot of bad blood between the old guard and the new guard. I wasn't there for the old stuff and I could not care less (except to say that if what THE OLD ADMINISTRATION is accused of is true... they should rot.) What I can say is the school today has active involved parents. It has bright kids working hard. It has a good mix of teachers. I have no public option that comes close. I'd still like to know your relation to NEST... [ Reply | More ]

General Topics 06.04.08, 12:30 PM Flag

And the DOE knows all, right? The DOE doesn't like NEST because NEST doesn't blindly follow the curriculum that the DOE mandates. For instance the Math program. The money for that comes out of PTA dollars. There is also history there from the old principal. My dc is in Kindergarten and having dc there gives me such piece of mind. I had dc in a local PreK in Brooklyn last year that many people consider a really good option. To me the difference is night and day. Nest is an excellent school and any child that gets in there is very lucky. The parents are lucky too because not only are they getting a great school for their kid they will be getting the piece of mind of never having to go through this f*cked up admission process again that is handled by an incompetent DOE. A word to the wise, don't pay attention to those stupid report cards that the DOE put out last year on each of the schools. The horrible school in Brooklyn that my dc attended received an A. I was flabergasted. Partly that was because if improved from one year to the next and there was and still is plenty more room for improvement there. Part of what gets factored into the grade is the responses from the parents. Parents at that school (where I observed teachers chewing gum while teaching) rated that overcrowed school higher than Nest Parents rated Nest. Its all about expectations and experience. Nest parents never are complacent and are always looking at what can be improved, unlike the parents at the school who received an A, who were happy with the status quo. The people who say that Nest isn't a good school, do you have direct experience from sending your kid there or is this just speculation? [ Reply | More ]

Sorry about that. I felt the same way last year when my dc was applying for kindergarten. Only we were lucky enough to have that NY York Magazine article come out that bashed the school at the same time people were gettting their acceptance notices. Last year they had a waitlist and my dc was on it and I think because so many people believed the bad hype, they opted out. I was, and still am today,so greatful for that article. :) [ Reply | More ]

this is a very, very odd accusation to make. anyone can and should read the school report for any school they are interested in on the doe website. i'm shocked this wouldn't be the first thing anyone would do as preliminary research on a school. i'm not saying the research isn't flawed. particularly the subjective data. but the polls conducted of teachers, for example, are very telling. i'm not celenia. just a parent who has done her homework. Well, I am a parent who did their homework too. I toured many schools, public and private and I choose Nest and my dc was lucky enough to get in. So I think my opinion means more than yours because my kid is ACTUALLY IN the school and I am ACTUALLY dealing with the school on a day to day basis. In short, I have direct experience and you are operating on "I think, therefore I am". I can tell you and anyone else who wants to know, its a great school. If it weren't I would be equally verbal about that as well. As I said earlier, the school my dc went to last year got an A on its report card and this school is so bad. There was a mass exodus last year of kids because parents realized how horrible the school was. Yet the DOE gave it an A. So stop quoting the DOE. They are seriously one of the most f*cked up government agencies around. They are on par with Motor Vehicles. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I have spoken to other parents. There are kids in my neighborhood that go there that are in 3rd grade, 5th grade and 7th grade. I haven't talked much to the parents about their kids workload but I have noticed that their kids have a lot of time to do other things. The 7th grader also takes ballet 3 times a week and the 3rd grader takes piano and acting class afterschool. So the workload must be doable once the kid/family put a schedule together. I think that WAS true under the old administration. They don't seem that strict to me. It seems pretty much the same as the school my dc was in last year. It could also vary a bit from teacher to teacher. They are consistant about what kind of behavior they expect from kids and its nothing out of the norm like no hitting, no calling out, finishing your work etc. Kids have recess twice a day.
