Where to look for non-cheesy dressup/princessy gifts that aren't crazy expensive. Have a 4-year-old birthday party comeing up. Birthday girl said she likes Fancy Nancy things. The mom is NOT into cheesy Disney Princess stuff. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

unless you're buying from 18 different sources, scouring the flea markets, and making your own, embrace the cheese. It's fast, cheap, and it passes. [ Reply | More ]

because they promote commercialization and discourage creativity - there's nothing wrong with the archetype of a princess or a mermaid or a fairy or whatever - those are all creative aspects of play. but that's very different than being bombarded by these character images and marketed too heavily as a child-consumer using them. Eh. I think it's naive to assume your child is not going to encounter the Disney stuff at some point. DD is just as creative in her play whether she's dressed up as Ariel or Princess Coffeecake (her own creation). [ Reply | More ]

I'm not that controlling. Gifts are at the discretion of the giver. [ Reply | More ]

I was you - lock, stock, and barrel. But I got tired of trying to prevent all disney things and explain why, to my 4yo dd. I try to balance it, now. I explain to my dd why I don't want it to be the dominant theme, and she does understand that, but she still gets her fix. She gets so much pleasure out of it, and now that she's nearly 6, she's past most of it. [ Reply | More ]

I do this with all the licensed stuff we get. I'm not pissed at all--just don't want it. [ Reply | More ]
