DH is one. He went to the bookstore and read the acknowledgments of books he liked/similar writing style/etc. to find the names of their agents. He put together a query letter and sent it to 6 agents at a time. About half each time would ask for the manuscript. When he didn't hear from any of the first three after two months, he sent a second batch, but his first choice agent from first round ended up taking him as a client. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks- this is useful. I have a group of 'like' books but hadn't thought to look inside for agent acknowledgement. Did he have the manuscript completed or just a proposal? [ Reply | More ]

If it is fiction, you need complete proposal. Non-fiction can be proposal with a few sample chapters. [ Reply | More ]

It's nonfiction- a biography. I have an outline with chapters and an article that is a condensed version of the book- I wonder if that is enough [ Reply | More ]

Non-fiction is bought more on topic and the bio of the author than fiction, so it should be fine. GL! [ Reply | More ]
