Interesting that most of the Hunter bashing is about the building. It's safe and clean. What's the big deal? Are private school parents really that shallow? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Hunter is less likely to get bashed than anderson because Hunter takes the position that the kids not chosen in Rd 2 could still succeed there. anderson takes the position that their kids are the only ones who made the onsite who could've thrived there. That is obviously a fallacy and evidence of competitive mean spiritedness on the paret of these parents. hence, they are bashed. its all in the attitude [ Reply | More ]

Not true. Anderson has always maintained that it has too few spots for the number of qualified candidates, onsite or not. [ Reply | More ]

I am talking about UB posters here who go on and on about how their dc is an out of the box thinker and could only be understood at the onsite, and that anderson picks the smartest of the lot and that the others are just jealous because their kids are not "divergent thinkers" and on and on. surely you have seen this rubbish here. have never seen a similar position taken by hunter parents on UB [ Reply | More ]

Actually, it's crazy posters like you that think scores are everything who post here more than the "divergent thinkers" posters. The crazy moms at Anderson who think their dcs are special because of their scores. Are you one of them or just a garden variety bitter a$$hole? NP, btw. [ Reply | More ]

anderson does not and has never taken this position -- just ask the many parents whose kids attend who just made it in off of the WL in years past. (i'm one such parent, and my kid has never, ever been made to feel someone less deserving than any other child.) it's all just noise generated by those outside of the school, imo. the vast majority of parents with kids there just feel lucky, not entitled. I agree that people don't say it IRL, but the many anderson posters here do say it everytime the subject comes up. Its as if they have a mission. Even the anti-sib discussions, and those related to getting rid of the onsite are full of this kind of sentiment. someone said they fight with everyone about this because they feel their existence is threatened and likened it to the state of israel in one post. I find that all very problematic. Its a good school with smart kids, but this idea that it is some embattled messiah for the divergent thinking kids of the city is serously annoying [ Reply | More ]

yes, that attitude is very annoying -- and maybe i just got very lucky with my group of friends there -- but my point is that i have never in real life heard or even overheard other A parents talk that way about their kids or the school. every school has its nutjobs -- unfortunately, i think the few at A post on UB. but that attitude is not pervasive at school, at least among the people i know there. ...and visa versa. Many kids at Hunter, historically, have been Anderson rejects. The two schools often have selected different kids. Very few kids ever got accepted at both. And I'm speaking about when the admissions notifications from BOTH schools went out in February. (i.e. up until 2 years ago.) [ Reply | More ]

In response to the previous post. My daughter was accepted at both Anderson and Hunter. Originally I chose Hunter because of it's reputation, but at the last minute (over that summer) and a gut instinct I appealed to Anderson to reclaim the spot that was offered. My daughter is now at Anderson and fits in very well. In my humble opinion, I feel Anderson offers a more nurturing environment...that was important to me. I also know a girl who was accepted at Hunter and rejected at Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

People have to feel comfortable where dc is and facilities are certainly a part of that. [ Reply | More ]

It's not about luxurious bldg vs lead paint bldg. It's about natural light. for me, I know Hunter is a great school but went to college with very little light and it was very depressing for me. I don't want that for my dc, that's all. Dh has SAD, btw. [ Reply | More ]

I am sending DC to Hunter next year, and the facilities are a bit off-putting (and I am not a fancy kind of person). We did not apply to privates and toured many public schools, the facilities at Hunter are drab, a bit smelly and lacking in windows. That said I am over the moon happy to be out of the arms of the DOE. A bit initimidated about potential pressure, but people with older kids keep telling me not an issue in elementary and the school feels genuinely warm. [ Reply | More ]

we did not even apply to hunter. twins, live on UWS and did not see it happening for both. decided why bother. never set foot in the place, and while I don't care about fancy facilities (we are at a public school), I would hate a place with no light. Our public is bright and cheery with tons of natural light. I like that. [ Reply | More ]

But I think the ops point is that is really the ONLY thing people seem to bash at Hunter and the only thing that Hunter parents are really criticized for is "child abuse because of sending their kids to a school with no windows" [ Reply | More ]

no, many private school parents wouldn't even consider it. some opt for trying for it to have a backup or because they like to say dc made it there even though they have no intention of sending dc there. implies that people don't love it as an option. [ Reply | More ]

Hunter's non-uniform curriculum and some of the teaching have been criticized also. People have posted that the school is working on these problems. The elementary school has been criticized for not preparing kids for the rigors of Hunter High School also. [ Reply | More ]

I know a parent who has one child at Hunter and one at Dalton. He says the schools have similar problems in terms of uniform curriculum, but the difference is that at Dalton they have money to throw at the problem (e.g., they hire a consultant) and at Hunter they need to rely on parent volunteers and grant writing. I think progressive schools tend to not have a uniform social studies curriculum among classes in the same grade. It was a problem with math at Hunter with one teacher teaching multiplication in 2nd grade and the other not teaching it. [ Reply | More ]

Is Anderson really like that? Heck Hunter even contends that kids who don't make the cutoff could thrive there, but they have to have the cutoff somewhere and don't want/need to comb through 500 dc to get ones they like. [ Reply | More ]
