Am going to Ferber (cio) my 6mo tonight. Need advice. She currently goes down with her paci, sometimes swaddled. Our issue is that she wakes during the night and needs the paci back. Should we put her down for the night with or without the paci? Also, when we do our checks, should we give it back to her when we check? Or, are we weaning off the paci too, just by cio? You're losing the paci and the swaddle at the same time? Is this for going down awake too or just night wakings? [ Reply | More ]

It's just for night wakings. I'm wondering about the paci - usually we re-insert that paci multiple times in the night - I'd like to stop this and get her sleeping through. So, do we let her go down with it (she goes down well), and just not give it back to her when she's cio in the night? Or, do we give it to her when we do our checks? I can live with or without the swaddle - that's not the big issue. [ Reply | More ]

I would not give the paci back in the night. [ Reply | More ]

If you can get rid of it now, I would lose it for everything. YOu can try it any way you like or feel comfortable with. If no success after a few nights, try something else. [ Reply | More ]

So put her down tonight no paci and start Ferber, right? [ Reply | More ]

That's what I would try. But having btdt, I would do straight cio. For ds, it was less confusing and faster. [ Reply | More ]

Meaning - put baby in crib and let her cry until she's asleep - no checks. is that right? Vs. Ferber where we go in every few minutes? [ Reply | More ]

Yes. I read Mindell's Sleeping through the Night and found it to be the best book. Basically gives you ideas on how to tailor a sleep training schedule/method you can live with. GL [ Reply | More ]

i disagree. paci is comfort. when she is ready, shell sleep through the night on her own. up to one year is typical for babies to wake in the night.. sorry. [ Reply | More ]

So would you rock her in your arms for up to an hour each night in the wee hours? This is our problem. She [ Reply | More ]

i answered below. 6 months is tricky bc shes still quite young. Let her cry it out for one night..and then see how it goes.. for both you and her. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah - it's younger than I ever thought we'd do this, but it's gotten so bad at night my dh and I are fighting so much. I can hardly keep it together during the day - sleep deprivation is so incredibly unbearable. [ Reply | More ]

you know, i personally think you should let her cry for a breif bit, but then give her back the paci. my thinking is, ferber isn't ideal, i know its necessary some times, i did it a few nights, but the paci is good in my opinion. my 2.5 yr old sucks her thumb constantly, and she already ahs an overbite, so im wishing mine took the paci when younger.. the grass is always greener. when she si a littl ebit older, shell be able to find her own paci and put it back in.. But she's up from 4-5 am nightly and paci doesn't work. This is our reason for cio. I'm not against the paci, but I am against rocking her for an hour in the middle of the night. [ Reply | More ]

OH! Thats different. Let her cry it out then. I thought she settled right back with paci, as mine does with thumb. I totally agree. I would let her cry it out. Youll be surprised..shell probably just cry for 20 minutes or so..but it will feel like alifetime. Time it ot make yourself feel better.. [ Reply | More ]

Yep. And by the way, my 2nd is colicky and 2 months old and sometimes I have to let listen to her cry for 30 min or so, can't stop her, but then she sleeps so much beter. So I guess its not ALWAYS a bad thing. [ Reply | More ]

op here - the 6mo is mysecond and was severly colicky - used to listen to her cry for hours a day. I think that's part of my reluctance to do this to her. She's finally not crying all day, and I want to make her cry again? [ Reply | More ]

Ugh.. thats probably in my future then as well. see how long it lasts, if she cries for 1 hour, bag it, but if its like under 30.. i would keep it up and see if it gets shorter each night. [ Reply | More ]

we did cio with a paci. db would find the paci herself and put it back in her mouth. the key is to not go in -- after a couple of nights, db will either find the paci or do without. you may want to put a couple in the crib. it is a great soothing tool for db - especially that age. [ Reply | More ]

to do CIO means to wean from the paci - that's called a "negative sleep association." You're wasting your time unless you do [ Reply | More ]
