HS grad asked me to help her put together a resume. she has a younger sibling who has special needs and she has been very involved in the sibling's care. how would you put this? i think it's misleading to say "worked with a SN child". what about "exposure to..."? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

she's trying to work in special ed. as a shadow or assistant. so it's very relevant, just not sure the best way to put it on the resume. [ Reply | More ]

would you say 'worked with' even though it was a sibling and not official? [ Reply | More ]

do a skills based resume rather than a chronological. [ Reply | More ]

OP: how about this? instead of an experience or skills section, i put a section called "experience and exposure" and then put special ed experience and then childcare experience (babysitting, tutoring, etc). that way i don't have to put job titles. [ Reply | More ]

it's a little odd on a resume. I think I would put something like that only if it explained a significant gap in employment. Can she put it in a cover letter, if it's relevant to the job she's applying for? [ Reply | More ]

she just graduated from high school. she doesn't have much other work experience other than volunteer work and daycamp counselor. she's trying to work in special ed and i think it's good for her to show that she's had some exposure to it. [ Reply | More ]

East... don't list it in work experience. Just create a second "area" (not like she's at risk of going to two pages) and call that "Other Experience." There she can bullet point being caregiver. Then just coach her on how to deal with this in an interview. It will come up. If she has any affiliation with a support group, that could go in there too. [ Reply | More ]

how does it sound if we do an "experience" section and put Special ed experience and say she's worked with the therapists and implemented some of their ideas. and then i can put childcare experience and put her daycamp job, etc. [ Reply | More ]
